Any Eczema parents who R2ied ?

Hoping i get some pointers/help from parents here

Our kid is 3 months old.first kid. he developed cradle cap around second month..now the second cycle is going on.

he does have eczema for the past one month..since it looks pale/white and doesnt bother him,we thought it might be because of the powder we apply and stopped it.since its there for a month visited the doc yesterday and he said its eczema and its common with indian/dark skinned kids.It might go away or it might stay

he doesnt seem to feel itchy but we are mighty worried that he might have it through out his life
my wife never had a chance to nurse him and he was on formula from Day 1 with some pumped breast milk which has also almost stopped for the last week

We use olive oil on his body before bath

after reading up online,i hear all kinds of suggestions from just forget abt it to steroids/homeo/ayur medicines

will start applying cetaphil from today instead of reg J&J moisturizer
We are in South Florida,so tropical climate

Thanks in advance for all kinds of suggestions

plz chime in

Our child also had eczema when young. We consulted pediatrician and also a super-specialty skin doctor who advised topical steroid based creams.
Dosing a young child with a steroid was not acceptable to us as parents so we researched everywhere online and found 1 remedy being suggested frequently : apply regular old Vaseline to the affected area. We did this and within 2 days the eczema was gone. Miracle cure. Many swear by it.
Try it - might work for you also.

1) cradle cap is not eczema, its sort of fungal infection.
2) the white nonitchy patch is neither eczema.....the very sign of eczema is itching.
3) the Florida climate might help in eczema & may increase cradle cap (due to sweat)
4) Olive oil is very good for skin....but its non sticky....it gets absorbed in the skin very fast & doesnt give any covering to the skin. ...for eczema u need a sticky oil that makes a layer & protects the skin.
5) Pediatrician had asked us to stop using J&J oil/ cream/ shampoo....it further dries up the skin.

Indian climate & homeopath meds have helped our baby in her eczema so far....now i am waiting for winter to see if it has really worked...bcoz it gets worse in cold climate.

hope this helps....& stay away from steroids

As pani puri has mentioned, cradle cap is a fungal infection- oral antifungals like griseofulvin may be necessary - topical ones don't work.
The white patches may not be eczema - could be post inflammatory hypopigmention ( very common in Indian kids in India- resolve with weather changes) or tinea versicolor -a fungal infection. The location of the lesions help in making a diagnosis as well. Eczema is mostly seen in the Flexural surfaces .
The mainstay of treatment for Atopic dermatitis- is a Moisturizer - a thick one like vaseline, cetaphil or lubriderm. Wipe the scales off after the skin softens with the moisturizer.
Avoid drying of the skin- less washing and bathing and less use of the soap is recommended. Use soaps( like Dove with moiturizers) sparingly. pat dry after bathing and apply the moisturizer on relatively wet skin.
Steroids -starting from OTC 1% Hydrocortisone to more potent ones are used for flare ups and steroid sparing creams like Elidel or pimecrolimus are used for maintenance with good results.

Yes,I cradle cap is different.I shouldnt have mentioned it.its a goner now
both of you suggested what my kid has may not be eczema..but the doc here says its eczema..and it might go off
we are using cetaphil cream after bath(we bath him twice a day)..there is no marked improvement nor there is any increase of itching
it doesnt bother him..so we are happy about it..his skin looks patchy though

These are the steps that helped us prevent our three year old from getting eczema,

1. eliminate use of all toxic (household cleaning) chemicals
2. arm & hammer baking soda, spectrum organic vinegar, dr bronner's liquid castile soap to do all household cleaning
3. pumice stone (with handle) to remove iron rust in toilet
4. (maggie's) soap nut to launder clothes (which eliminates need of toxic anti-static sheets or liquids) and clean jewellery
5. seventh generation brand diapers and baby wipes
6. seventh generation paper products (paper towel, toilet tissue,..)
7. California Baby brand liquid bath soap and shampoo
8. California Baby (4 oz) Moisturizing Cream LIBERALLY after every bath
9. very soft cotton dresses when in bed
10. mattresses made with non-toxic materials

The keys are,

1. do not let the skin dry (esp avoid bubble baths)
2. keep all toxins (in food and in household cleaning) away from you child and household
3. KEEP YOUR CHILD FAR AWAY FROM STEROIDS

I agree steroids should be used only temporarily. Long term use is not advisable.

Stup 123 - Reference to picture and post # 37.

First of all, what a beautiful baby! I probably missed the picture you put up earlier- but here is my 2C on what your son has. I am not a dermatologist nor a pediatrician - the childs doctor is the best judge of him.

Pruritis is the sine qua non of atopic dermatitis/eczema. if he has absolutely no itching, you have to wonder. Infantile AD generally is a little more severe- the lesions appear as red, tiny vescicles on "puffy" surface, scaling, exudation, wet crusts and cracks.

I think your child has " pityriasis Alba" ( PA)- Alba- white, pityriasis- scaling. Even though, he does not fit into the age group- might be something to consider. 90% of patients are in 9-12 yr age group, never seen after 30. Very common in India in the summer months- disappears in winter. Extensive PA can be seen on upper extremities and trunk. Its pathogenesis is unknown and some believe it is a form of ' eczematous dermatitis". On histologic exam, melanocytes are reduced in number, fewer melanosomes are present, but transfer of melanosomes does occur- hence, pigmentation tends to return, in most cases.

Just some more information for you to research on . The treatment for PA is mild steroid creams and oral PUVA if the hypopigmentation/white patches are persistent as he grows older.

Added later- Stup 123, I just read your original post- you said that you live in florida and that your pediatrician said that it is common in Indian/dark skinned children- now, i am pretty sure that he/she was thinking that it is PA too. Since, Some consider PA to be a form of " eczematous dermatitis", your pediatrician may have used the term eczema for easier understanding. But, it should be called PA for better management going forward, especially if the white lesions persist.
