Are social networks like Facebook, Google+ right in enforcing non-pseudonyms?

Read this in today's WP. Should companies like FB, Google+ have right in enforcing people to use real names or people have legitimate reasons to use online pseudonyms? What's your opinion on so-called "nym wars" ?

[QUOTE]
But Rushdie, of course, is not the only one who has had this problem with social networks. Facebook is particularly strict about ensuring that people are using their real names for their accounts, as it lends itself to more accountability, Facebook vice president of public policy Elliot Schrage told The New York Times on Monday.

Google also instituted a strict real-name policy on its social network, Google+, but has been relaxing that rule in the face of complaints from people who say they have Celebrities often go by different or stylized versions of their names publicly, but domestic violence victims and political dissidents can also rely on pseudonyms for safety. The discussion over the use of these names online has been referred to as the ?nym wars.?

A private enterprise offers its services under some terms. As long as the terms don't violate existing laws, it is fine. Don't know what "rights" you imply. It is the consumer's choice to utilize such services. As for whether it impacts the private enterprise's business, time will tell.

When subscribing to cable service, they request for SSN. I have asked them why and haven't got a satisfactory answer. It is not like they checked my credit history (if they had to, they should inform me that they would, per laws).

Rights means activist's rights in using pseudonyms to evade law authorities. Arab spring was mostly carried out with the help of online networking. Now 'Occupy Wall Street' has the portential to grow bigger if it can tap online audience and several IB insiders can participate and volunteer some info. if they are not tracked by their real life identities is opinion of some activists. Private enterprise has choice to offer service with conditions but when it craves for bigger membership, should it reconsider the strictness to allow special cases like activists or people fighting for domestic abuse victims etc ?

There is not much activity for r2i facebook page

I think the concern is the same as member may not want to disclose their real identity.
