Burning Britain - London Riots

Post by okemos »

The rioting, looting and plunder that started in Tottenham on Saturday has now spread like wildfire throughout the capital. Shops were broken into, properties vandalized, and flats and vehicles set alight by gangs of mostly angry young men .

The unprecedented economic crisis, linked to the global political economy’s fundamental breaching of ecological and energy limits, has already generated outbreaks of civil disorder all over the world in different regional and socio-political contexts. In the Middle East, we have seen the Arab spring, triggered by rocketing food prices, driven by a combination of environmental, financial and energy factors.

In Europe, we have seen protests and rioting in Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Turkey and France, fuelled by the devastating impact of the global recession. It is only a matter of time before these crisis-conditions catch-up with the United States mainland.

What do you guys think is the true cause of these outbreaks of civil disorder and do you think these riots spreading to US or India??

Perhaps too many guys are jobless and they aren't members of this forum.

US has nothing much to worry at this time. It may, when folks get pre-declined credit cards in the mail.

Rioting due to economic crisis is a western phenomenon. We Indians do not stoop so low. We are happy with our hindu-muslim-sikh-SC/ST-con-bjp-valentine's day rioting thank you very much!

I am impressed by the bipartisan reaction to the riots and the action taken to control it. It was all done on a civilised scale, without attempting to raise partisan reaction in the public.

I have been watching the London riot scenes on the TV and impressed by the Police restraint.

This contrasted with a very short snippet of a non-hindu-muslim-sikh-SC/ST-con-bjp-valentine's day riot near Pune. This showed the Police firing on fleeing and apparently un-armed villagers. And Policemen wrecking cars. It would indeed be interesting to see some detailed coverage of the incident.
Indeed a contrasting view.

Interestingly, was talking to my friend in London yesterday and she tells that people were seriously UNIMPRESSED byt he Police Restraint. They felt that the police were mere spectators while the rioters looted and destroyed and should have deployed forceful means to control the situation then and there.
Tosday's Hindu also carried an editorial about how unprepared police int eh UK are for such kind of riots because they dont normally encounter this level of lawlessness and the lessons they need to learn fom teh same-ie be quicker on the uptake with plastic bullets, batons etc

Agree.
Initially there were hardly any police. I was told of six police officers present with some 100 odd looters. There was nothing they could do. They were intent on protecting the firemen nearby.

It was later when they moved out in force that they showed the restraint I was talking about.

If the English team was here and Indians were rioting, the English team would have taken the first flight home.

But look at our team , they agreed to play in the vicinity of all this happening.

Only two reasons
- Indians dont care for their own safety
- Indians over trust the British police and security system
