The launch of GSLV with indigenous cryogenic engine was a failure.

These scientists should be made to work on ICBMs and the manned space programs should be discouraged. What a waste of taxpayers rupees.
Compared to this lauch an dinduction of Bramhos was a much bigger achivement.

GSLV explodes on take off. well I told you so. India is trying to leap frog into space but at a time when china is firmly resolved to harm India, we do not need any more space launches but a concentrated effort in developing ICBMs. Like I said in post no.3-ICBMs that are all solid fuel and can be based on a triad of foces both land, air and sea based.
ISROs efforts are in the wrong direction.
India had to go back to Russia for crogenic engine after India's own effort was a failure.
In any case like a lot of things in India , wasteage of tax payer rupees.

Raja - Thanks for all your updates in this thread and I appreciate it. The success of ISRO in launching satellites for the past 40 years or so is high compared to failures and we should certainly applaud their efforts. Unfortunately, this one failed and wish that in near future the successive launches are successful. Compared to other Indian Govt. Owned enterprise, ISRO is far far better and our scientists are doing a great job!!

What has been the success rate of India's rocket launches?

India has had some success with launching PSLVs (polar satellite launch vehicles) and these PSLVs were indegenous.
But India did not have much success with GSLV and the main crogenic stage was Russian.
India tried indegenous cryogenic engine but failed last time.
Well you all might have read about the recent tensions on the Korean peninsula. The main reason is that a country such as North korea has made significant advantages in missile development.

Indian missiles do not have that range.

Why cant we privatise rocket launches ? what is the need for a govt. enterprise to look into it....Had this been opened up for pvt.sector, I am sure indian scientists would have succeeded ...

This is what will end up happening. The government will put up the "space" around India and may be even the "outerspace" over India up to Andromeda galaxy for auction to private companies and they will start bidding, the price will skyrocket(???), and some minister like Raja will loot several crores. ISRO has so much patience and perseverence to succeed and this is a major milestone we are talking about. I guess private companies would have given up as soon as they started as space programs take a lot of time and patience to mature and companies may not see returns for a very long time. Now let the private companies first make a car that does not catch fire and then we can talk about taking over the space program. :)

It is the DRDO's responsibility to build missiles ......it should not be mixed up with ISRO's activities.
ISRO is doing their job, which is to build a rocket capable of launching larger communications satellite into the geo orbit. They are eyeing a lucrative commercial space business here, as there are just 2-3 launch service providers in the world now. If ISRO can perfect their GSLV they can have a share of this business , with cost advantages.
I don't think ISRO is wasting tax payer's money (anyway it seems a pittance compared to the amounts involved in these mega scams) as I think they generate a good amount of revenue through their existing satellites, technology transfer and building satellites for international operators through joint venture with EADS Astrium.
Still, it is 10 years since the first GSLV launch, and they have not perfected it yet, so something definitely needs to be done to make the program successful soon.

FYI, With the recent lanunches of Agni series AgniII prime , AgniIV , India is finally on the right track. India will test an IRBM in the coming time.
http://news.in.msn.com/national/article.aspx?cp-documentid=5597822
Well these tests are late by 20 years but nevertheless better late than never.
India also needs to test the ultimate Agni the Surya ICBm with 15,000 to 20,000 km range.
