Getting a B1/business visa being on H1B here

This might be a very unique case. Opposite to most of the cases where people want to convert from B1 to H1B. I am on a H1B and been working here for 6+ years. I am going to return to India. I am on the verge of securing an offer with another company ( not the company that I currently work for). The other company is considering the possibility of me starting here in US and transition to India within 1-2 months. Transferring H1 is not worth it. Is there a legal way to do this ? Is it possible to get a B1 being here on H1B without making a trip to India ? Thanks

R2I - Basic Steps questions

Gurus, Moderators, Administrators,

Can one of you post the link or create an answer for the new comers about the basic R2I questions. Some of them I thought where:

1. Shipping
    - who are the probable vendors can be used & their rating (just one word, like, good, ok, best, etc)
    - What are the fees at destination port involved (if known)
    - Custom charges, if any
    - Are house hold items are elligible for an exempt of customs
    - Appx. days it may take to reach (based on the experience by others)
2. Airfare (of course, cheap)
3. House market (to buy or rent at the destination city)
4. Schooling (by cities)
    - can have a link on citywise break-up
5. Jobs, Finance, OCI, etc..

I'm sure if we search around the forum, we will be able to find all the info above. Something like, questions posted here and answers in the other thread. It would make more easier for a newcomer like me, if a new thread as "R2I - steps" (something like that) is created & made sticky.

Thank you.

Green Card Extension

Hello to all,

I had a query regarding green card travel extension(form I-131 for travel waiver). My mother in law is a green card holder and her primary residence is India. She comes and stays with us every 2 years or so.

Recently I heard that there is a US INS mandate that all green card holders staying outside USA must visit US every six months to keep their Green card valid. Have any of you experience this? I am not sure when this law came into act but I have had other relatives whose parents have green card and they come to USA once every two years as well. Let me know if anyone can provide some help on this matter.

Thanks,
KJ.

Credit Freeze before R2I

I am thinking of freezing my credit before I R2I. Has anybody done this before?

My readings has led me to understand that the credit reporting agencies will send me a PIN that I can use to unfreeze the credit file when I want to. If requested can/will they send the PIN to an Indian address?

Thanks

If you care for aging parents, you may be due a tax break

Does this mean we can get the tax break ?? or the same rule of social securirty number applies ??

If you care for aging parents, you may be due a tax break

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- If you care for an aging parent, you're not alone. The National Alliance for Caregiving and the AARP estimate that 21% of all American adults care for other adults. Seven million Americans take care of someone 55 or older and live at least an hour away, a Pew Center study reports. And that number is growing -- it is expected to double within 15 years.
There is some tax relief for adult children who support their aging parents. You can reduce your 2006 taxable income by $3,300 if you claim a parent as your dependent.
So how do you know if you can get the exemption? There are three tests to determine if your parent is eligible to be your dependent. The first one is obvious-- what's his or her relationship to you? To qualify, he or she must be a parent or stepparent.
Second, you must provide more than half of your parent's support. If your parent lives with you, you must determine how much you're spending on shelter, food and medicine. (But if your parent receives Social Security benefits, make sure your contribution truly adds up to more than half.)
If your parent doesn't live with you, you should account for what you pay to support the parent in his or her home or in an assisted living facility. But check with the IRS to make sure you're in agreement over what is considered "support." Certain items such as appliances or cars may not always be counted. Visit www.irs.gov for a copy of the IRS publication "Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information" to determine what types of support contributions qualify.
Finally, the parent's gross income must be less than the personal exemption ($3,300 for 2006 and $3,400 for 2007). But any income that comes from Social Security doesn't count toward that total; neither do disability payments, according to Kiplinger's personal finance expert Kimberly Lankford. Do pay attention to your parent's investments, however. The interest and dividends earned from stocks, bonds and savings accounts all count.
If you share the responsibility for your parents with other adult siblings, you may be eligible for the IRS multiple-support declaration. In this case, only one sibling can claim the parent as a dependent, but you can vary which sibling makes the claim each year. End of Story

The witness stared out the window, as though he hadn't hear the question.

"Isn't it true that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?" the lawyer repeated loudly.

The witness still did not respond.

Finally, the judge leaned over and said, "Sir, please answer the question."

"Oh," the startled witness said, "I thought he was talking to you."

Business ideas in India

Just copying the thread from old forum. BusinessIdeas (http://groups.msn.com/R2IClub/liaissues.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=150051&LastModified=4675608503014923055)

I am looking to compile a list of possible business that can be done with 30 Lakhs investment (and additional 70 Lakhs loan from the bank). The business should meet following criteria:
1. Shouldn't be dependent on a few large clients
2. Should have some scalability
3. Owner should be able to take a day or two off every week and possibly go home everyday at 6:00 PM.
4. Can be manufacturing or service industry
5. Banks should find it convincing enough to finance
6. Can be done with small number of assistants/labor
7. Break even should be within 3 years
8. Can be done honestly (relatively) so we NRIs can do it without having to develop lots of contacts first.
9. Have some scope for creativity (not sure what that means myself!)

Finding a business that meets all of the above criteria is very difficult and of course we cannot predict the outcome but I would like to hear from you folks. I know most of us have thought about being our bosses at one point of time in our lives but not being able to find a bright idea held us back.
Please put forth your ideas, even if you don't think they are bright you never know who will make gold out of it.
Please state your rationale behind the idea as well.

Thanks!

*_AAR Process_*

AAR = Admin Action Request
RM = Reporting Member
PM = Member who posted the post in review

When a post appears to be violating code of conduct any of the Member/Admin may post an AAR in MRV thread. ( this thread)

The Admin Team will acknowledge the RM as soon as possible.
Admin team will review the post, respond and if necessary take action within 48 hours.

We strongly encourage decency, civility in all the posts. It helps to read and review your message before clicking "Submit Reply" button. Also we request some tolerance on the part of the members who are reading.

The complaints and offensive posts are not judged by one person or immediately. This is the reason for establishing AAR process. AARs are processed by the admin team.

When a decision is reached one of the members of The Admin Team will post the response. The posting admin may or may not have participated in the review process. The admin may have been just selected to convey the message - he/she is merely a messenger. We request members not to assume or attack the admin who posts the responses.

Also please note there are guidelines which allow the admin team to remove posts and ban members immediately without going through AAR process for specific major violations. The violations are listed in Code of Conduct.

Since the number of posts during a day is large and all admin are serving part time, we request more member participation in recognizing posts which violate the guidelines of this forum. Also some of the posts may create divided opinion in the team and may take some time to respond. Please be patient, your request will be processed in the order it is received. In all cases, Admin decision is final. Admin team has no obligations to explain the reasons for judgment.

Please understand that no discussions or debates on admin action will be entertained.

Above, each post is an icon Image: http://r2iclubforums.com/clubvb/images/buttons/report.gif (http://r2iclubforums.com/clubvb/report.php?p=4630) , you may click on this icon to report the post directly to admin without reporting it on the MRV thread. When reporting this way, please state the violation and what you deem offensive in the dialog box that opens when you click on the "Report Post" icon. We prefer that MRV thread be used, but both approaches of reporting a post are available to the members.

Thanks for your cooperation and support to our efforts to keep up the high quality of this forum.

Best Regards,
*The Admin Team (TAT)Image: http://sc.groups.msn.com/themes/R9c/pby/img/emoticons/emrose.gif *
