I'm efiling an India return from the US for the first time.

In India, I used to everify using mobile linked to Aadhar card. The mobile is with a relative now, so getting the OTP is slightly awkward logistically. Another method suggested is to everify using NetBanking with an Indian bank. Has anyone tried that -- (I do have an account with an eligible bank) ?

Otherwise, I can send a signed paper copy for verification to CPC instead. I'm not confident this will be particularly reliable.

I have been e verifying via icici netbanking. Very smooth.

Net banking is smooth. Just do not login into tax site before logging into bank site

ICICI Net banking Tax centre has a link for everification. Have used it and it works like Makkhan.

I have been filing ITR 2 claiming back TDS from my Indian debt mutual funds. I have been filing this myself, without any help from CA. Just curious how many people here are capable enough to file it themselves? :)

I file directly uploading file to income tax website. And for OTP I generally have my cousin in India on the phone whose mobile # is the one linked. He gives me the OTP over the phone and done.

Why don't you guys get a prepaid SIM from India and use it in US? Roaming is free. It costs about Rs 20 per month to keep the line active. I use an Airtel prepaid SIM. It also allows me to watch Airtel TV for free, via VPN and then I do screen mirroring on TV.

A 2 minute phone call to my cousin solves all problems of OTP which I need only when I filed taxes for my mom. To each his own. While some may be comfortable with SIM, I am happy with a 2 minute phone call and get the OTP and done.

I don't have Excel on my home PC. I do have OS X Numbers and various flavors of OpenOffice Calc, but I don't think they work properly with all the Excel macros used in the Income Tax Department Spreadsheet.

If filling in form online (instead of uploading), can we fill and save from time to time, and then submit when totally ready, or does it have to be done in one go ?

I download the Java ITR utility. Opened ITR utility filled it and saved the form. Opened it as and when I needed to add data and save back again. When the form was fully filled, uploaded it to the website. It is a simple process and there are youtube videos probably that explain the process also for the Java utility download and upload. I did this about a month back. This is a better approach than excel.
