[QUOTE]Sharjah, April 08: The humble lungi, the traditional drape of millions of Indians, has attracted the wrath of authorities in Sharjah.
The police are reportedly cracking down on men wearing the dress in public places.
Local reports said an Asian man was arrested and interrogated by a police patrol in Sharjah a few days ago for wearing a lungi in public. He was told not to wear the dress in public again.
Google search returns many interesting articles on the news, but this Deccan Chronicle article had really funny comments.

Exactly what did they interrogate him about?
Lungi follows Gandhian philosophy "Freedom of Movement"! Freedom is something that the middle-easterners hate!
No wonder!
What next? Wearing boxers over briefs will be a crime?

Lungi termed obscene & banned in Sharjah
Some really hilarious comments from the Deccan Chronicle page.
-------------
Lungi is disgusting. The lungi people are spoiling India's name. Ban lungi everywhere in the world.
Lungi ugly thuuuuu... thuuuu. We have to ban it in India also.
Lot of people in old city wear lungis too. Especially the butchers. Go tell them not to wear them. They will "oblige" you. Remember that this is India, not Dubai or Saudi. This is our traditional dress.
The lungi is the most disgusting apparrel a man can wear. I am glad that the Dubai authorities are clamping down on the lungi fanatics.
Lungi is more decent than any other male dress but only when you are not sleeping and sitting down without being aware of exposing yourself. So goes with the traditional saree. Both are draped around. In comparison the thobe which is worn in the Middle East is the worst of its kind specially when one walks against the wind wearing it.
If you mean lungi exposes your private parts and attracts opposite sex.., Why is it that the girls are allowed to wear dresses that attracts men......
Please note that Indians do not wear a lungi in the Gulf countries. Bangladeshis are the ones who wear lungi most of the time. They do not wear any dress other than the lungi after they return from work. So this is a crack down on Bangladeshis.
Lungi is not proper cloth to cover the body. Obviously it looks typical for other nationals. It must be banned in public places.
Lungi is not indecent if it is worn properly.
I live in the Gulf and I have seen our indian brothers wear it improperly, sometimes they tie up above the knees and go in public. Actually lungi is to wear at home as night dress to feel free. If they are talking about indecency what about women in UAE who are wearing exposing and indecent dresses?? They call it fashion and for men it is indecent. how ridiculous.
Brothers - it’s not like particular lungi they are referring to! They mean a single cloth which gets tied at the waist. They are referring to those clothes which have openings in front and when you walk your thighs and your inner wear are revealed. If you think you shouldn't object then just think of your mothers and sisters and daughters who walk on roads and accidently they see what they shouldn't. How do you feel then?
Many guys wear lungi in appropriate way and they are least bothered about others walking on the roads. Everybody should be decent and respect people. Good step by Sharjah.
People should distinguish between lungi and dhoti. Lungi is either in checks or in multi-colour design. dhoti is always in crisp white. Lungi is banned or at least discouraged in most temples of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Dress not only covers our body but makes a statement. The dhoti symbolises formality whereas a lungi denotes informality or casualness. A lungi, especially the hideous designed ones, should rightly be banned in Sarjah where a sense of discipline and decency is practiced by the local population.
You mean P. Chidambaram can no more visit Sharjah? Aung San Suu Kyi will be forbidden from Sharjah? Not that she would ever want to visit, but what a bunch of idiots are these?
Sharjah emirate bans any dress that reveals body parts. I am 100% sure that this guy was wearing the split-lungi and was looking like Zeenath Aman (we all know her) showing the filthy thigh portion. And sometimes, high winds also play their part. This is a common scene here, and we all have families and children and we also object to such dress code. All Indians are expatriates here, and must respect and abide the rules and regulations of the country they reside.
If you are staying in their country and you don't like their rules, please get out.
Lungi and its distant cousin dhoti reveal private parts. I dont see why anyone would wear those in public. No one wears boxers in public...do they?
this is funny..lungi is ugly, ban it in India too
Lungi ugly? What do you like then.. bedouin?

I sincerely hope this one time copy and paste a la Jani will be OK... :-)

I don't understand how? Unless somebody is lifting their lungi/Dhoti all way up to reveal it! Lungi is far better than shorts/half pants as they don't reveal [Deleted by admin] while one is sitting!
Btw, i hate lungi!
