Myth busting - pseudo science claims

Post by realgoogler »

I am opening up a thread for scientific claims and Myth busting. Please document any scientific sounding claims that are false.

I got this video in multiple whats app groups. People just forward just like that without even checking any word. I am not sure if they careless or gullible. They just educated with me in my class at some point :)

For example this video with the title
"Very interesting .... As we all know, equator line is passing through Kenya and Tanzania. Below is very interesting experiment displayed to tourists in Tanzania. See how precisely the earth?s magnetic force work just few feet apart. Truely amazing..."

First of all, there is no magnetic force. And coriolis force is negligible to counter induced or random noise in the environment. Power of viral fake news.

So the first myth is not clear to me - doesn?t the water twirl in opposite direction in southern pole region? Didn?t know that effect would be so pronounced just few feet from equator.

I have seen arguments claiming that it is Coriolis effect. But I am not convinced. In many videos that you see - claiming to demonstrating this in various ways near the equator, they are actually forcing to create the vortex.

Coriolis force will be so negligible and will work if ensure controlled environment with no bias. What happens in this equator tourism is some of trickery where the way pour the water can set that bias. Coriolis effect definitley works in a bigger setting for winds and cyclones.

When Chief ministers and PMs are such idiots that believe in ancient satellite communication and plastic surgery, India will have a tough time to advance.
