Polution and Traffic in Pune

Post by bestOfBothWorlds »

During my recent visit to Pune I talked to few of my close friends about my r2i plans. All of them had a same reaction that there is so much polution in Pune and Traffic condition is getting worst day by day etc. Especially everyone was very concered about incresing polution. My elder daughter has little bit of wheezing problem. Can Parents who have R2i?ed to Pune please tell me how their kids are adjusting to polution? are kids having any health problems because of polution?

Pollution is horrible on main roads. But there exist residential areas which are relatively pollution free. Sahavas , navasahayadhri, bhosale nagar etc are good areas.

Advice

keep your commute short
stay in pollution free areas (may have to pay a premium.... its worth it)
Drive with windows closed and AC on

Dont have kids yet .. so cant advice

I saw a talk by Vinod Khosla (maybe on youtube or google video) on green tech where he said Brazil (due to govt. initiatives) is well on its way to curbing auto pollution. Even some of my Delhi friends said that Sheila Dixit did a great job in improving air quality there. Wonder when Pune will get some like minded person with the interest/ability/power to push through some good legislation.

Trying to influence govt. policies is a job for some other people. Should companies give incentives to their employees to promote conservation? I know some companies in the Bay Area do this.

You're right, pollution in Delhi have reduced a lot over the years. It used to be really bad 5-10 yrs ago.

One of the Big 6s had done a feasibility study few yrs back for changing the map of Pune..goes for eveything in including trafiic/pollution. Don't know what happened to it.

I bet someone paid a lot of money for that report which has probably been filed away properly ;-)

Just like the last scene in Raiders of the lost Ark.
