Question for shipping companies on this forum. For a 20 ft container would my charges vary if the shipment was direct from say a port in NY to Mumbai vs if it came with 1 or 2 stops in between at some transit port. Is it something the shipping company controls or it is like airline where you pay more for a direct route than one with stop overs...Just curious...
Thanks.

Ocean freight rates for any given port pair vary by steamship line and each steamship line usually has a different routing plan. Ocean freight rates vary not only because number of stops but due to a host of other factors such as transit time, quality of service, etc. Your shipping company (freight forwarder) does not control the number of stops or routing schedules but they may be able to get you a booking on a carrier with a good reputation and one that has a faster transit time if you are willing to pay a premium.
For NY to Mumbai, transit times average around 40 days notwithstanding unexpected delays which do happen on occasion or frequently depending on the carrier handling your container. There are some carriers that offer cheap rates to Indian ports but are known for unacceptable and frequent delays due to poor routing and management of their transship ports while there are others that cost a bit more but arrive at the port of entry per schedule more often than not.
Hope this helps clarify.

Question for shippers
Why?
That is a good question. Typical transit time from NY to Mumbai is 32 days on Indamex Service (operated by carriers such as CMA-CGM, NYK etc). This is the fastest service at an affordable price. Others may have shorter times or longer times and price/cost depends on many factors and not on the number of stops.
When talking of stops, there are 2 possibilities :-
1) the same ship makes a few stops on the way to unload/load more containers - this is normal as no ship goes from point a to point b direct.
2) the ship leaving NY takes it to a port and unloads the container there and another ship takes it from that port to yet another port and finally a third ship brings it to Mumbai. This is called trans-shipment and is to be avoided if at all possible. Many things can go wrong when selecting such a carrier and delays can happen if the container misses a connection at some intermediate point along the way.
Hope this answers your question.
