KirKs, you wrote what I wanted to write. I don't want to write the comparison myself since it derails off the topic here. I think cost of living/expense calculation is good example of over-analyze.

Best airline cost and comfort wise for Travel to India during Jul 2009

The fare is high through Europe because it's summer and it's a peak season for air fares going though Europe. There is no penalty for the stop over period. You are right, in Cathay, it came to $1495 for adult, but we wanted to take a tour in Europe (London,paris,frankfurt/rome) for a week.
