One person can gift 12k per year without having to inform the IRS. So you can gift 12k to your father and 12k to your mother. Same for your inlaws if you have them. I checked with a financial planner in the Dallas area today and he said there is nothing like a minimum for DFA but most planners may not want to work if your investable amount is less than their minimum. Besides Vanguard, Fidelity or TRowe Price you may want to consider a brokerage like Charles Schwab or TD Ameritrade. Create diversified asset allocated portfolio with large cap, small cap, real estate, developed international, emerging and bonds or cash.

Vanguard does help you asset allocate at very low cost but Dimensional does have advantages over Vanguard. DFA costs are low like Vanguard.
