Social Security Survivors benefits for r2ier

Post by Smita »

We all know that SS retirement benefits are available even though one has returned to India - as long as the person has contributed 40 quarters and meets other elegibility criteria.

But what about death benefits for survivors? People may not realize but it may be a good life insurance program for people who are eligible.

My question is if someone has returned to India, can his/her family get survivors benefits?

I don't see any reason why it should not be available to residents of India. As you mentioned, it is a good insurance program indeed. My neighbor's husband died of cancer 6 yrs back and soc sec helps her to carry on with her life. She is a substitute teacher. The nice thing is that even if she earns she will get soc sec portion of her kids.

Thanks for your response, Layman... the neighbor you mentioned in your mail, were they living in India at the time of the unfortunate death in their family?

The neighbor incident is not related to India. That is an example to show that Soc Sec is also some kind of insurance if something goes wrong.
