USD account for Indian citizen/resident

Post by Mastan Bhai »

I'd like to open a bank account with the features:

  • USD primary operating currency.
  • Preferably a savings account but not necessarily.
  • Ability to send & receive funds via US ACH.
  • Ability to trade stocks listed on NYSE.
  • INR balance a bonus, or some hassle-free method to change USD into INR (low fee INR wire/DD to India is fine as well, or local NEFT).
  • Minimal currency conversion and debit card withdrawal fees.
  • Debit card should work within India/be able to withdraw INR equivalent of USD balance.
  • Indian taxation obligations (most important).

So far the only thing I've found that comes close is Standard Chartered's international trade account. I've looked into HSBC premier as well, but to be eligible for the "Global view" online banking with multiple currency balances you need to be an NRI. I'm looking for something similar to http://www.offshore.barclays.com/dollar-account/

I've also heard very good things about http://www.schwab.com/public/schwab/investing/accounts_products/accounts but sadly it's restricted to USC.

Help appreciated!

As a resident of India, you are limited to Resident Foreign Currency (Domestic) Account. What did you find about it? If you haven't, check with Axis, HDFC, or ICICI as they all offer that (and post the details for the benefit of others, of course).
