Munich (Germany) to Hyderabad

HI All,

Now the dilemma is away and getting ready to R2I. May be it is time to start a diary, first diary from a German R2I.

Here are some updates as to what happened all these days

I am trying for jobs since December 09. I got lot of emails from head hunters.

1) I cleared a tech interview with some service companies. They gave me a feedback on the phone that the tech. interview was fine and next Hr wanted to talk, but after that have not heard anything. I guess they needed someone immediately on board.

2) My current employer also offered me to work in Pune, but rejected it as the offer was low and also Pune was not my target to R2I. Also there is an option of working as a consultant from India, but then it will be the same work and that brings in nothing new. Well yes, they may be paying hourly basis or a salary of 25 LPA. I am not sure to take this one if they happen to agree, but discussions are still on.

2) Through contacts I went to a discussion for a German company in Blr. The interview was in German (1.5 hrs). The pay is not great and finally I had to compromise on salary and took the offer.

In the mean while I submitted my application for DE citizenship. Since the application is in processing, I asked the joining date be August 2010. So I have time to get the German passport and also OCI in time.

It’s a huge gamble

I discussed all the positives and negatives with my wife and was hard to convince her.


Here are the major points

Continue to work here
- Both are earning and yearly savings upto 30 LPA. My current CTC is just 18 LPA.
- If we continue for 3 more years we will be financially we off
- Child can goto Skiing classes, Inline skating, swimming and most important Football. He likes it very much.

R2I
- Can start a career in middle mgmt and develop myself in the coming 3 yrs
- Financially a drawback but gaining lot professionally
- Wife any way has to shift to part time to concentrate on child studies or extra curricular activities and so on
- May be we can plan our financials well and achieve more. I will be talking to RRK shortly to really chalk out a good plan for us

Planning front
- Already made an Excel file with all finance details
- Have made an Excel file with all the contracts and terminations to be made. Once we have decided on a date, I may need to send some 30 or 40 termination letters to different services. It’s all paperwork in Germany.
- Contacting some shipping companies to get quotes for a 20 Feet container. May be I should find someone to share a container from Germany – Bangalore.
- Will buy lot of new furniture like complete bed room for adults and child
- Need to sell my car

Good to hear from you that you have got something sorted in terms job.

I would say get ur Citizenship and OCI and then make a move to India. I m also in ur position but in UK, I got my citizenship and OCI and in my case we both wnt to move out. I have a daughter going to pre school here.

I m planning to r2i in and around 2012.

As other members said, get German citizenship first.

Don't think of moving to UK. Job market in UK is not very good at the moment. There are too many people (including migrants from all over the world) are fighting for few jobs in UK. At least in Germany you have the advantage of non competing with non-German speaking folks :)

UK being an English speaking country may be better for Indians but who have already settled here or directly coming from India as their first overseas trip.

After spending so many years in Germany, you may actually hate life in UK.

Just to update,

Did not get the Citizenship approval in time and I had to reject the offer. I am still waiting for the approval and not currently pursuing any opportunities back in India.

Since our whole family is filled with R2I thoughts and plans, now to divert, we are acquiring some new electronic items and keeping ourself busy. I am just modeling a Home Theater setup with a new LED TV.

May be I'm wrong, here is what I find interesting:

I am planning for an R2I from Munich (Germany) to India in an year or so.

a. What is your objective:

* R2I or
* Go somewhere else [US/Europe/elsewhere] or
* Confused [like many of us] and you need help in decision making here


b. Are you happy of what you planned to achive when you reached in 2001? - Achived 100% or 50% or 30% etc ?

c. How comitted are you to make a move, whenever it'd be?

I'm asking all this because, I think no place is good or bad, when we make a decision we need to adjust our lives around it.


I thought I'll leave it for later[after you reply], but I think these are your strengths[in Job Market]:

* Technology
* Language [German] and European work-ethos and
* Status [German Citizenship, whenever u get it] - Giving you ability to contribute to a company if asked to travel

You made me feel as if I won the Eurovision myself for a moment. But Lena has acheived something great. I hear this song everyday in the radio up/down from work.

Primary objectives
* Parents are independent for now, but will need some support in future. Even if we go back, we will select a metro but they still live in a village
* Child will start schooling next year
* thought of moving across before growing old :)

I was very much committed, but the offer was not so great that I went ahead without the German citizenship.

I am trying to readjust to see more years here before going back permanently. I think the winter depression is killing us here, otherwise I dont see any problem.

Yes absolutely. And thats the reason I rejected the current offer as I am confident of getting at least same or better at a later point of time.

I have been a constant reader of the threads on this forum. I was looking for somebody in Europe and their thoughts / issues on R2Iing. Great to read about your experiences and inputs. I currently live in France and looking for R2I in late 2012. I am also looking for the EU citizenship option to widen our opportunities and keeping in mind my 6 month old son's future. ;)

How r u doing in the mean time? Any progress in your R2I plans? Did you see that your German skills were not seen as your assets by indian employers? And, do you think just to improve travel convenience it is worth changing Nationality? because, I was also wondering for myself if this is any option.

I am fine and thank you. I dropped my plans as of now. As per my financial Guru (RRK), I am young and tsarted my AAP now with his assitance, I thought the reasons were not compelling to move back. Also since my wife is also working it is a big compromise on our earning potential. May be after 3 years if I am better placed financially, I would make a move even without a job or as a Java developer :)

What I am doing now is a short visit (1 month) to India in December.

German skills: Yes, I think you are speaking with experience, no one values the German skills, but there are few German companies which are interested in it, but do not want to give you any additional value.

Nationality: I think it depends on what you plan in future. Since I invested a lot of personal time in learning German, I always thought to have some connection with Germany professionally. And also Europe is such a wonderful place, that you can anytime visit it (if the wallet permits). As such, generally it took 3 to 4 months for others I know to get the citizenship and strange in my case its almost 6 months and no news until now. I asked the case worker and it should come anytime now.

And congratulations on your decision to move. It would be nice to share your experiences for the benefit of all. Also I will post some relocation in your post.
