After what age R2I (or hybrid) is ruled out?

I am 52 and have been in US for 30+ years, came to US after graduation. I visit India very often since mother and siblings are there. Now that I cannot r2i with kids, I want to split my time in India and US once kids graduate from college (in 4 years). I think the name for it is hybrid r2i. So, I am looking at hybrid r2i when I am 56 years old (wifey will be 53). Assuming my health and finance are ok, do you think hybrid r2i will work? I'll be very happy if I can do hybrid for 10 years.

If you have the will and resources, which you seem to have, it will work.

I've met few in their early 60s in Bangalore who split time between US and India. They own a flat in India and spend several months at a time in India. They've made friends in the apt complex in India. Some of their Indian friends visit them in US when they come to visit their kids in US.

When you are visiting family for few weeks, you are in a comfort zone knowing that you'll be leaving soon. You are a guest and being entertained by family/siblings. When you decide to live in India for several months at a time, it will be different. So it is more of a question of adaptability when money is not a factor.

I'm looking to do the same and semi-retire @ 55. I may pursue short term consulting when i'm in US.

it has been said several times in this blog that India is good for retirement. we in our family are in the same age group and have the same idea - spend the harshest US winter months in India and come back in spring to avoid the harshest summer there. Festivals are also plenty during that time - Navaratri, diwali, pongal and December music season. The only problem is maintaining two residencies and extra cost - need to find long term vacation rentals there.

You can do hybrid r2i as long as you can bear the 24 hrs flight between US-India. As you age may be your leg and back may start giving problem. Save enough for a massage therapist, then you will be set.

there is also this question of double taxation. once you start going to India on a regular basis, the 180 days rule goes out the window and you will be considered an ordinary resident even if you stay for only 2-3 months (this is after 5 years or so I guess) and you will have to start paying taxes to Indian Govt on your global income.

This is the first time I have heard that you have to pay taxes to GOI on global income if you stay for 2-3 months. Can you please elaborate or provide links that have details? Is this new?

I am also fantasizing hybrid R2i. :-) But this new taxation thing might be a deal breaker.

I wouldn't think that Hybrid R2i is good for our wellbeing long term.
I could be wrong though.

What about ddta? So if you pay tax in US you only have to pay the difference in India, isn't it. So it may not be much after all.
