Some of us procrastinate R2I plans especially when kids are in 6-8 grade due to fear of 2nd language, 10th grade in India being a crucial juncture etc. If the kid is ready, what do you guys think about R2ing after kid has passed 10th grade in USA? I believe 11th grade onwards, you don't have to deal with 2nd language fiasco and entire education can be had in English. Has anyone attempted to do this or plan on doing this? What are some of the dilemmas?

JD, is the plan to continue the kid's under-graduate education in India as well?

+2 is very competitive in India. When I was there itself one needs to make 98.9999 (you get what I say, even though I am exaggerating here) to get into reputed colleges. The kid has to score this marks while making a shift to rote education. Lot of mugging/vomitting to do.
I know some people send their kids for college education in India. That is a different ballgame.

Not recommended IMO. I had a couple of classmates , (one from US another Dubai) that joined in 11th grade. Both had a tougher time than the rest of us and flunked 12th science. One of them had a younger sibling that joined 8th grade. By the time he reached 11th, he was used to the system and made did well enough to get into engineering (which most middle class families thought of as an acceptable option at that time).

If you r2i when the kid is in 11th grade then it would be logical to continue under graduate education in India otherwise it doesn't make sense to R2I just for 2 yrs and then the kid is back in USA for under grad. Kid can come to USA for post graduation if needed that depends upon the situation in India at that time. Who knows things in next 6-8 yrs may change to the point it may not be lucarative to get higher education outside of India. Ofcourse, it can get worse too. This whole thing is really very confusing and it's not easy to take a decision.

Hi Mandy,

How did your kids cope with the change long term? We are in India for a vacay and i still want to give r2i a try with my 7th grader. I too am concerned about the lack of studies there. Am ready to pull him back a year for learning languages. Please reply soon. I am in tears with no support from my son

This seems to be issue with this generation of parents that their kids are somehow not in the right path; When I grew up, - an am sure is the case with most of you - my parents only get to see my final progress card and never had to worry whether i was studying or not. It was only in X-std that my father said he wanted to see me as an engineer - some engineer not specific at all.

We tend to get emotional about our kids, but my observation is that if we leave things to them to decide and help them see both sides of coins, i am sure they pick the right choice.

I totally agree with you me2_r2i. But my son is afraid of the rote learning that happens here.

Not only your son, I worry as a parent; and that is why I plan to move back to US after X-std. Its not one is better than the other - its just the freedom that a kid gets is zero in Indian education system.
