Hi
I have lived in Canada for 13 years-from grade 5 to undergrad. I am Hons. B.Com from u of T. My parents want to move back to India as my g.parents are getting old. They want me to go back with them. I too feel it would be a good change and the job market in Canada is not very conducive now. Will I get a job in Chennai with my HB.com. Are there any other courses I should do before I start to apply? I am also interested in doing a post grad in Commerce. Any suggestion is welcome

You will have fun relearning the local language, both spoken and the body-lingo all over again. If you think job market is not very conducive in Canada now, you need to really wonder how you will compete with thousands of locals in Chennai. Imagine that you are taking a year or two off in a strange foreign land and have fun. Post here and let us know how life turns out, eh ?

With B.com alone getting a good job will be challenging in India. You can do a MBA or other PG in India which might take 2 years to complete.During this time you will also get adjusted to the new place and finish your PG.

Looking at your age and background I would think it will not be a easy sail for you. Especially as you say you have brought up in Canada. For you it is going to be very difiicult to get used to Indian environment, culture, politics and attitude and mentality of the people over their. Wish you good luck.

If you have grown up in CA, it will be difficult to adjust in India. Have you been making some trips to India for holidays to get an idea of lifestyle and living conditions? If yes, then you are entering into an Indian market with Lots of competition from people with advanced degrees. Unless you have an MBA from a good institution, you landing with a decent paid job are bleak. Assuming that your parents return to India and you continue to pursue an MBA from Canada? Canadian MBA may open up more options both in CA and in India. You also need to consider that getting into an MBA program in top schools in India is very tough - cut throat competition. So if you are planning to start working with a BCom, I would reconsider the decision.

I am thinking of joining the CA or CMA programme or a M.com(company Secretary) offered in Ethiral College Chennai. Any feedback?

Good Choice. You will make good friends from upper middle class to wealthy families. Also learn more about local fashions in womens' wear and where to shop. There are good places to eat and socialize nearby. Do you know that the Spencer's Stores next to Ethiraj College is older than all of the Marks & Spencers in Canada ? Anyhow, the Spencers in Chennai is a large mall, a great hang-out place... especially useful for someone studying accounting and commerce.
Are you going to Chennai on a long term visa such as a OCI or PIO ? You better do that so that you do not have to deal with the paperwork burden of a student visa.
If you are wondering why there is nothing here about CA, CMA or M.Com., you can scan the posts before this. Getting local knowledge on how local students compete in the local job market is what you will learn by attending college. Any of these will help you gain that. Fighting your way to School and back in Chennai traffic itself will be a new lesson for a canuck. When you get to Chennai, try a sample commute and test whether or not you are going to like it for a daily routine. You may find other colleges in the city closer to where you plan to live, so that commuting is easier. Since these courses you list do not require serious academic infrastructure ( like laboratories ), most colleges would offer these.
