There is an existing poll about how much $$$ savings are needed before you R2I.

http://www.r2iclubforums.com/forums/showthread.php/24179-How-Much-is-Enough-for-R2I-new-thread-for-2011

However, total $$$ figure varies substantially from person to person. Total savings needed depends on your expected return on investment, your cash flow from job etc and if you already own a home or not.

I think a more appropriate poll will be to ask members about their expectations for monthly living expenses EXCLUDING housing costs. Such costs will more or less similar across the country and poll results will be more meaningful irrespective of your target destination in India and your housing preferences.

Although this poll is for 2011, these costs can be easily extrapolated for future years using your inflation expectations.

If you do not mind I would like to add following variables to consider before we poll: Considering that we are all R2Iied. We can safely assume we have some expectations set.
Lets consider the family size of 4 people, husband, wife and 2 kids.
1) kids go to standard school not necessarily to international school.
2) one made servant.
3) one Car.
4) One vacation in a year with in India in a 4 or 3 star hotels.
5) Once a week dinner in a standard restaurant

I know things depend on lifestyle. But majority of the voters have chosen "80K to 1 Lakh", is that per month? I somehow expected the cost of living in India is much lower than in the US, but I guess I am mistaken!!!!

The study above takes into account all Tier cities. What might be 80-1lakk for blr might be 1-1.3 for mumbai and 60-70 for pune..

80-1 lakh with housing in blr seems reasonable..folks arent getting 20-25 lac salaries in their mid 30's for nothing.

Folks,

Poll question is monthly costs WITHOUT housing costs. Housing costs vary significantly based on location, size and whether a member rents or owns the house (with or without a mortgage). Since housing involves many variables poll excludes this cost to make it neutral to housing preference.

You had it right the first time.
One "is" made servant to many things after R2I.
