How underpaid am I?

I know that there are several web sites that tell you what your compensation should be based upon your skills, role, location etc. I have been there and done that. But I still want to ask this question to the community here as the members can give a different perspective that you can't get on web sites.

I have 14 years of IT experience. My current role is Application development tech lead. I do not have any people responsibility.

I am here on H1 sponsored by a desi medium sized consulting company. My compensation is 77K annually that includes 10 paid holidays and 10 paid vacation days. There are no other benefits. My location is in Mid West.

So, my question is - how underpaid am I? (The question itself assumes that I am under paid!)

This is just one of the several interlinked questions that need to be answered to help with my R2I dilemma. I am using divide and conquer strategy. If I post all my questions then there would be too many things to consider from past present and future and it will be easy to lose the focus.

So, one issue at a time - what is your opinion about my current compensation?

Thank you for your opinion!

All that I can say is you are being taken for a ride by desi company. I am sure they must be charging your client(s) a lot and a major chunk of your rate is being shared by your employer and vendors if any. Although lot of things (skill set, location, experience, industry etc) factor into the pay, you are being under payed by 40% at the minimum.

First thing I would try is to get rid of middlemen and join the client directly.

You mean OP must be making around $192.5k ? Personally, I think that is on upper end unless OP has exceptional and rare skill set AND working for a some super good tech company or a bank in CA or NY. My opinion.

Most desi companies charge around $50 per hour, so $77K is fair. If you switch to work through a local consulting company, you may get up to 100K, although with desi company R2I would be easier, also many desi companies do not deduct for health insurance, big desi companies have lot of projects across usa, so continued work.

Once you have GC, you can demand upto $120 - $140 based on the location, skill etc

I meant : 1.6 * 77K = 123.2K

I always go with avg 10 grand/year of ex. So for you 14 years, you should be in $140k range.
