Wondering that after 16 years in US and with citizenship etc the desire to quit and go to India has something to do with mid-life crisis or is not? Many has put life stagnation as important element in their decision. Isn't that stagnation is kind of mid-life situation for many then?

Yes, it maybe.
So extending that line of thinking, are you saying potential R2Iers should instead Buy a bike or porsche?

If I had $500k savings per household....I would most probably quit my job and do whatever that comes to my mind ( most probably move to India for a while.)

Not sure if it is mid life crisis or realization that going to work till I get really old does not sound like a very exciting option compared to live a little free life and figure out later how to retire in old age.

Not sure how louder your India calling is - but muster that guts to just do it. You only got this one life to live. Sometimes your heart deserves to win over mind - all the analysis paralysis will keep you in the US for eternity.

After a decade in US, I R2I'ed 5 years ago. Life has turned very interesting and chaotic - with so much going on, there's not a chance for mid-life crisis in India. Good luck!

For me, in retrospect it was a combination of both. I see two options for it:
• R2I on temporary basis, no job, shake things up until you feel energized again to work and the either continue in India or if things don't work R2A
  • Shake things up in US, semi-retire, change jobs, move to a lower responsibility job.
But both needs loss of some income in the short run, but it's worth doing it for the sake of living fully. On monetary terms, my R2I might have costed me 500K USD (opportunity cost), but I am living fully now which is priceless. It also solved my whole dilemma of R2I/R2A, cleared my confusions and gave me the inner peace. So, this costly medicine is worth it.

On a lighter note, move from something like this

You are thinking on the right track. But that $500k figure is elusive. In real world, that number keeps on going up like the x + 1 syndrome. The only way to beat it to make a strict resolution out of it - bookmark your post, print it out put it everywhere in your home, announce to your wife, convince her, tell your family and close friends so it's easier to execute :)

people say x+1 but it is quite possible its just evolution of our ideas over time, hard to say.....my expectations change based on my change in circumstances and I am perfectly ok with that.....I want to cater to the current me not the past me, whom I dont remember anymore.

So for now $500k per person based on current financial market conditions and current living costs estimates....lets see where we are in 5 years.

Money is the most effective drug, it's hard to let it go once used to it, for the majority. I wish you the best to execute your plans.

My magic number is Rs 6 crores as according to my calculation it will be enough for me to retire and spend next 30 yr in india.
I have no desire for fancy cars and big house I simply want to live a middle class life.
I had enough of staring at a screen for 8 hr a day and attending useless meetings.
I simply do not want to work.
