Desi2return;654703I guess the point is - Money is important only to the extent of enabling one to be free from depending on others. Money provides financial freedom but after basic financial needs are met, other things such as friend, family and carefree living becomes more so important.
This is Maslow's pyramid. The higher up you are on the pyramid, happier you are.

pqr2012;654647Over last 6 months 3 of my uncles died. This has completely changed my perspective of
life........
I am in my late 40s now and I think sometimes how tough old age and eventual death is going to be......
Six months and 3 uncles ? That is very relevant data. Did they all have a good innings when they were on the pitch ? Close relatives are like the canaries in the coal mine. When they fall off the perch, you need to take note of that, and take appropriate actions. First thing to do is to evacuate the mine you are in. And then figure out what the median life span of your close relatives of each gender were. You may give yourself a longer span, because of your healthy habits, and phoren stint.
When people start reading the obituary pages (in their daily newspaper or online) and at each announcement, pause and consider the age gap between the self and the featured hero of that announcement, it is time to set your affairs in order.

dbs,
Thanks for your kind words. A really nice person you are.
Desi,
Catching early this is probably the most critical thing. Every one needs to read
your reply.
Desi2return,
I completely agree. Money fulfills our needs, but for true happiness good friends, relatives,
optimism, sense of purpose etc are way more important.
PeterGriffin,
For last 15 yrs or so my most of my time I have spend on risk. When you watch the financial
market for so long you are amazed how the mighty can fall in a flash. May be that makes me
cautious. One never knows what the future is going to be. Prudent planning and risk mgmt is important.
I follow the rules of health as much as possible. But then Cancer, Parkinsons, Alzheimer's
can happen anytime.
I go to Ram Krishna Mission and slowly I am trying to adopt spiritual life (my love for
the financial market is the greatest impediment, addictions are dangerous and difficult
to get rid of).
But I need to completely focus on God and get true peace and tranquility. That is
what my instinct says.

Didn't bhagavan Krishna contend that
HE is both highest ROI and deepest bankruptcy ?
And you are but a skittish simpleton, set to do your karma in this world ?

The most important message from this thread seems to be if you can learn to be happy withoutanyone around you or caring for you, you are the woman....oops I meant to say the Man...

techynt;654742The most important message from this thread seems to be ......
Desi;654667Not much other than a healthy lifestyle (eating , exercise). However, one thing that is really really key is to catch these things as early as you can. This means do not ignore minor issues, seek multiple professional opinions. Regular health checkups and thorough ones are important. In USA, these can cost an arm and a leg. If you are in India or visiting India on a regular basis, then for $300 or so, you can get an absolutely complete and thorough evaluation.
If you are going to analyze your body fluids for the early symptoms of that disease which is going to kill you, why not get a bargain on that service...eh ? I like that notion....
, and besides, it is oh so like "us" to save for the estate/progeny.

Umang;654699My order is health, money, family and friends. I could live a decent life in that order. How can you think that money is more important than health? I would rather be a healthy fellow with limited means than a billionaire with cancer.
Money above family, what did they do?
BTW, family means: spouse and children.
I don't think anyone lives for themselves only, unless having an affair and backup for spouse is there, so money Will be higher than spouse.
But can some one make money higher than children??
Chasing money for me is lowest priority compared to health and family.
Protecting money from being spent, it depends. It's hard to live broke with good health and family, but if we have good jobs, it's doable.

This thread made me rewatch Ikiru. A good HD copy is on Google movies. Goes well with an alcoholic beverage and watch only alone.

@pqr2012: If you are interested in spirituality, please allow me to recommend "The Great Medicine that Conquers Clinging to the Notion of Reality: Steps in Meditation on the Enlightened Mind". It is my favourite spiritual text.

Many people choose money over family. I will be honest, there are many instances when I have chosen money over family. To give you example, I could have spent a bomb on rental or buy a spanking new expensive car for the family. But I didn't do that I have skimped on these to save money. Even stuff like delivering a baby, I chose that we deliver our daughter in India and wife went to India to deliver our baby and I lived in Singapore alone for 6 months, again chose money over family. We don't have a maid, wife does household work, but then she chose to be a housewife, so no maid, I help her do the dishes in the night though. Sending my daughter to school as well, I don't think I will send her to the most expensive school, something that is reasonably good in quality and doesn't cost a bomb.
So let's not fool ourselves. Money is very very important. Families could kill each other for money.
