Job Quitting Dilemma

Hello guys,

I will be permanently moving back to India after 10 years in US. Though I am in a bit of moral and ethical dilemma right now as far as my job front is concerned. Though, it might sound too simple and too stupid a question to ask but at the risk of being ridiculed here is my situation:

1. I am planning to give 30 day notice of "Intention To Vacate" to my landlord by 31st of this month.

2. My team manager, a very good bloke with whom I am in excellent terms, is organizing a team building meetup in Seattle, WA sometimes in mid-August, the week of August 14th.

Here is my dilemma, though California has "at will" law, meaning either the employee or the employer can terminate relationship anytime, without giving prior notice, still want to give them two weeks notice to find my replacement or at least pull themselves up till they find a new hire. If I tell my manager that I am quitting after the team meetup, he might ask me why did I withheld disclosing this information with him when I had decided to quit and why did I even accompany them to the team building meetup (which is mostly recreation time) and I think ethically and morally this would be wrong.

I have two options:

1. Tell my manager about my plans to quit before team meeting week.

2. Tell my manager on the last day of the team meeting and let him decide if he wants to give me two weeks.

What would you guys suggest, if you were in my shoes? Thank you!

It depends on how good your relationship with your manager is and what is he likely going to do if you give 30 days notice. There are some asshole managers who would tell you to quit immediately. So to these people it is better to wait till the last day and give no notice. But from the way you have say, I would inform as soon as possible. Definitely before the team event.

First of all, stop saying my manager... in a job, there is nothing that's yours. They are paying, you are working as unbounded labor. When your company runs the numbers and make priorities give you pink slip and dont think about your family, your events, your welfare or anything related to you. You will be fired same day with security standing beside you to take you out.
Your manager hides behind HR when you get pink slip and "my manager" word disappears.
Dont be emotional and if you really like your manager, keep in touch after you leave the job, go to his home in person and thank him. But on professional front, make sure you got all things tied up at your end and nicely tell them Good bye without any hesitation.
Your stay for few weeks more do not impact their quarterly earnings, so please think for yourself and make checklist for r2i and concentrate on personal things like what are the places you want to visit, dine, meet friends, relatives and so on.
Enjoy Recreational event with your colleagues for the last time before you leave..

My 2 bit coins !!!

I would not worry about team buildup factor. All states I think have employment at will clause, but many company would have 2 weeks notice period. Its always better to be leave in good terms, esp with a manager with whom you get along well! You never know when you would need them again for reference or next job! If you have a good relationship with your manager and you think he is a good honorable guy, I would recommend to let him know informally that you may be leaving shortly. He would be grateful for an advance notice. Your salary is not paid out of his pockets, and would prefer sufficient heads up notice!

When you have decided to not continue as a team member, then why go for the team-building? Let him know sooner than later. If you are on excellent terms with him as you say, then he might as well ask you to join them (even after resigning) and consider that as your farewell:)

Thanks to all of you for your valuable inputs. Really it helped me to see and to think about the situation more clearly. The only reason I was in a sort of confused state of mind was the team building meetup that is the plans otherwise giving a mere two week notice was the best and the most professional way to say goodbye to your team. Thank you again guys, your advise helped a lot here! Kudos to all of you!

Nothing on your relations with manager but couple of points based on your post (based on my experience)

1) Don't resign on 31st. Resign on 1st week of the next month. Your insurance will be covered by your company for the whole month in that case. If you are resigning on 31st. I am quite confident that you are not leaving on 31st Night to India :) and you will be left without insurance.

2) I don't know if you have invested in 401K etc. You can transfer the money only after you quit the job. It's difficult to do that from India. Stay there for 1 or 2 more weeks in US. Finish off those things and then fly back.

Two weeks notice is good enough.

Preferably more time if you want to be helpful to your manager, most of the time they are not going to let you go unless you are leaving with with a bitter note.

as FFH said, quitting in first week will be good, even though cobra covers 45 days after end of coverage (we dont even have to pay premium in advance, not sure if that loophole is removed.)

COBRA is an option, but it needs to be paid for (in case required). Yes you can pay within 45 days and still be covered from the 1st day, but still needs to be paid out of pocket.

So its far better to leave in the 1st week of the month.

If you have decided to quit, what is your big deal in attending the team meeting?

If I have decided to quit and I am looking forward to my future, I will be very honest to inform my Boss and not to linger around till the fringe benefit of Team meeting.

The "At will" law is with the land of courts. Here you are talking good rapport Mr.CalYug!
