Hi,

I am working in US from last 12 years, I have US citizenship. Planning to go back to India(Hyderabad).

My current role is Sr.Principal Software Engineer (Dev manager/Architect level) in Java related technologies.

I would like to know how are my job prospects with this experience and what roles I should go for? And what salary I can expect?

Please suggest.

Thanks.

Highly low chances of getting job unless you go through networking referrals and same company.

I suggest ask your company if they can employ you in India if they have operations...

I asked and it happend.. If we dont ask many times we might lose opportunity that never exists.

Thanks rmandy for your reply. With current company it is not possible to relocate to India. I will apply through referrals.

I am interested in technical management roles. Any other suggestions to make job prospects high, like getting certifications(PMP, scrum etc)?

Thanks.

I am not devOps expert but I have heard AWS is a very good skill to have. https://aws.amazon.com/certification/

but as a developer, I would personally not like to go into dev ops, too much work related to stuff which needs maintenance and troubleshooting for code I do not own.

But maybe Dev Ops automation , infrastructure as a code, with tools like Chef, Puppet is much more like writing code

Rbee, what is the intent for getting this certification? DevOps in cloud platform carries more value. DevOps in cloud starts bleeding well into system administration, which is not a skill most developers would have experience with. It would be a good idea to learn and understand that before pursuing certification path.

Automation is one of my favorite subjects. I have used a wide variety of tools in this space for CI even though this is not my primary job responsibility at all. I just work on them during downtime and have automated almost every manual task our ops team would do : ). I learnt a lot after we started using AWS platform and wanted to get certified, AWS offers several of them. I dropped the idea eventually due to lack of prep time. By the time I get certified, there would be something new out there and my certificate would be useless. :(

Hey,

To some extent, You dont code much on Devops automation comparatively.. Scripting is necessary but you will be using many tools all over the pipeline for automation.

Go for-

Ansible or Terraform configuration management tools as these are more robust and latest
Cloud foundry (server-less architecture) - PAAS
Monitoring tools like Kibana can help you a lot
AWS is ever growing stronger and certification will give edge monetarily.

As someone said in this thread earlier, DevOps need to be yet implemented by many Large organizations who are on legacy systems. To re-architect takes lot of time. So DevOps can be utilized for next 2-3yrs for job hunting.

Also keep watch on BuzDevOps.

Basically my experience is if you are thorough with one tool in each devops subset areas, you can scale up within no time for future tools.

Only those conquer who don't fear :) (rmandy quote)

How many years of experience before US work? That matters too.

In India, networking is important. Either you can get into niche product companies as a senior Architect, or into a big service company as a mid level manager. The latter has more chances of landing into, but you need networking skills and erase your accent as much as possible.

Hyderabad is doing well over the past 2-3 years. Give yourself 3 months and you can certainly land in a good opportunity. The lower the salary you ask for, the higher the chances. If you are looking at 40 Lakh plus in Hyderabad, then it becomes very tough as too much competition is there at that level. Only you can decide on where to settle. One advantage with India is that within 3 years, your salary can grow very well, or a job jump would be around the corner once you get your feet wet. The first 18 months would be crucial when you R2I.

good luck.

Just want to get some skills other than same old same old Java, JS, Struts etc.. I don't see much personal growth in SW development in usual bigwig companies, so want to expand to retail companies like AMZN,Target and automobile companies like Tesla, Honda etc plus I might move to India within next 2 years, I think Indian companies like certifications much more than here..
