Hello,

So i am planning to R2I in less than 2 months to bangalore and since me and my wife belong to IT field we might continue in our jobs which makes me wonder how best we can utilize time with my kids aged less than 7yrs..

Say we both travel to electrionic city and head back to home around 8PM which provides hardly any time to spend with them?

Here in UK there is hardly any day we come home after 6PM.

Moreover can anyone tell me if there will be after-school clubs so my kids can head back to those clubs before we reach home.

we are planning to stay near whitefield area.

Not giving enough time to ur kids in my opinion is not good for ur kids proper upbringing.

Either stay in UK or decide that only one of you will work.

India is not a place if you think of being home by 5PM or 6PM regardless whether you work in IT or not. Even govt employees in Bangalore will not be home by 6PM.

Sit back and think what exactly you want it and how to manage YOUR time. Forum discussion can only give some pointers and discussion and ultimately you have to bite the bullet.

White Field to EC -- That's long commute!, Very very long commute. If you have option, stay in EC(or whatever your work place going to be located at), that will save atleast 1.5 hrs per day. That's extra time with your kids. ANd with metro construction that's going to start on HOsur Road and on ORR, commute will be horrendous.

There are after-school day care centres. Check out the timings... Most will take care till 6:30 PM - 7 PM. The schools bus/van will pick up kids from school at 3 PM and drop them to these centres. Parents pick up after their work.

BTW - even if you get home by 8 PM, work will not stop(if you are in IT).. there will be calls to attend to ( because your counter-parts in US/UK , don't like to disturb their 8-5 routine :-) )

Thanks all for very valuable suggestions.

I am keen to R2I but understand the reality of working IT parents in cities like Bangalore.

Infact i worked in Bangalore in the past 2004-2006 and could not bear that traffic those days.

I am thinking of Whitefield since i own one flat and its like finally trying to live in own house.

With regards to commute from Whitefield - EC i am sure there will be company buses operating since there is no way i will be travelling myself in that horrible traffic.

I am thinking of giving a try and if things turn worst either get back to UK or just go to my native 2-tier town and settle for other jobs.

Wondering is there anyone in the forum with similar situation like both IT working parents in bangalore ?

Hundreds of couples work in IT and live happily here probably because there is no other option for them, i.e work in developed countries 9-5.

Anyways, I am a working mom and R2Ied. I don't say it's easy but again this is what I chose and gave up all US materialistic comforts. There are lot of side effects too because of this that I am going through but then I knew what I am getting into, so no regrets.

There are many work around here which you will only realize once you start working. You can take calls from home and need not in in office by 9AM as you may stretch anyway late nights etc etc. If you are OK with maid cook and cleaning, you ca offload this task as well and weekends can be just YOURS without doing any chores and running for grocery, vacuum. clean house, lawn cleaning etc.

Give it a try for few months if you really wish if you think you an offer in hand and if things don't work out, you have an option to R2A.

Even in USA, I have always tried to stay within 15-20 mins of work.

Living in own house but no time to enjoy, does not sound like a good recipe. My suggestion would be to look for a job in whitefield or rent in EC until you can trade your whitefield home for EC home.

Thanks MyRoots for encouragement.

Even in western countries its not always 9-5 if we consider commutes like NJ-NY or hampshire/reading - london,UK on daily basis.

A friend of mine who lives in Edison,NJ says door-door its like people start from homes at 7AM and return 7 PM to say the least.

Even here in UK for jobs in london its the same hassle catching the tubes/trains and going to office. Thankqfully never worked in central london and have no plans as well in future. :cool

Hello darwin29:

We were in Bangalore for 2.5 years between 2011 and 2014 and both me and my wife were able to maintain US like timings since we were both working for companies that were US based with secondary centers in Bangalore. Fortunately, both our offices were very close and we chose a school for our daughter that was opposite to my wife's office and we lived close by in Brookefield. All of us used to leave together at 7:30 AM, then I used to drop my wife and daughter and reach my office by 8 AM. Used to leave office by 4:30 PM, pick up my daughter from daycare (inside the school), then my wife from her office, and reach home by 5 PM. We had Vonage phone service with our US phone number that we used for conference calls to USA along with Airtel broadband at 16 Mbps so that we could work from home too. The timing was critical since heavy traffic used to build up by 8 AM in the morning and 5 PM in the afternoon near Kundalhalli Gate and ORR so any other timing would not have worked. However, we were the exception (not the norm) since most other people used to come in between 10 to 11 AM and leave from 7 to 8 PM and I'm not sure if we could have done it long term. In your situation, as others have pointed out, communting from Whitefield to Electronic city will be time consuming so you would be better off by choosing office, home, and school locations that are close to each other. Hope this helps.
