Hi All:
Greetings. Thank you in advance for your valuable advice and guidance in this process.
I am planning to R2I to Hyderabad in DEC'2018 and bring kids for 2019 academic year.We have a 10yr old girl and 4 yr old boy and been in the US for 18+years. I am looking for some help on the following:
- Schools in HYD for my 5th grader. Schools with academic, extra curricular with good qualified teachers. (I am flexible on the area). Also admission process for these schools.
- General expenses to meet (this is a wide open question but a ball park on how much we need to earn for a family of four with good life style - car, maid, three bhk house/apt for rent etc)
- Kids activities like swimming, tennis, carnatic music, dance etc. Where can we find information on this?
- Expectation on school fee's? activities etc
Many changes occurred in India which probably make it easier for transition now. My move is purely for my parents who can have good time with their grand kids while they are active.
Any advice/contact information is greatly appreciated.
thank you
Bhanu.

Hi Bhanu,
I am also in the same boat as you and planning to return in 2019. I have 2 kids (5th grade and 2nd grade next year).
I have done a lot of research and the top 3 schools people talk about are Oakridge, Sancta Maria International School and Chirec.
Oakridge and Chirec costs around 6 Lakhs per Year per Kid. Sancta Maria may be around 4 Lakhs.
Schools and House is the major expense in Hyderabad, remaining expenses are really manageable.
Let me know your contact details and we can be in touch. Ping me at 404 808 9648 if possible .

Schools: Admission process varies from school to school. The process starts around Oct - Dec of this year for next year's admission. I agree that Oakridge, Sancta Maria and Chirec are good. Kids in my apartment go to Chirec, Oakridge, BVB, Birla Openminds, Futurekids, Manthan, Phoenix Greens and Prerna. I haven't heard any major complaints from the parents about the schools.
Expenses: Depends whether you own/rent your apartment, kind of car you buy and general lifestyle. Our expenses are around 60K/month (excluding housing, school and vacations). We live very close to work, don't employ a driver and rarely eat out.
Kids activities: There are a lot places around Gachibowli and Kondapur. Best source of info is other parents.
Schools are expensive in Hyderabad. It might cost anywhere between 2L - 6L per child. If you have good recommendations, you can try Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan or Obul Reddy or JublieeHills public school.

Schools and Apartment/Housing accounts for 70% of your expenses.
Medium Sized Gated Communities: can expect anywhere from 25-35k for apartment rent and amenities extra. these apartments have less amenities compared to large size gated communities
Large Gated Communities: can expect anywhere from 35-55k for 3 bhk. amenities around 7k to 14k depends on what is included (some apartments include water and electricity also as maintenance)
Schools: anywhere between 4-6L lakhs for popular schools like oakridge, sreenidhi, chirec etc where as other schools are 2-4L and traditional schools from 60k-1.5L
Expenses: this is lot depends on individual style like size of car (diesel/petrol consumption per month, insurance and repair varies) - 10k, driver - 12-15k, shopping - lot depends on individual, movies - 1k per instance, eating out - 1.5 to 2.5k per instance, gifts for occasions - lot depends on individual
Standard Expenses: maid expenses around 3k-6k (regular vs organic etc), vegetables/fruits/milk/grocery - 15-20k, cable/internet/phone - 2.5-4k
Vacation: depends but around 10k to 40k per month (1L for domestic vacations of 7-10 days and 3-5L per non-India vacations)
Medical: depends but around 4k for any incident related visits and medicines
One thing is for sure you will have a sticker shock and feel very expensive because of rents and schools. Lot depends on how you want to live.
Welcome and good luck with your journey!

Thank you itsvennela and umag. Very valuable points added. It has provided lot of clarity.
Do you think kids can handle languages like TELUGU/HINDI easily in school or do they have any options? Please throw some light on this.

I wouldn't hold any value to these languages except that they have to get pass marks to promote to next grade. I should say that these all international schools are robbing NRI's showing that they offer french, german, spanish etc and our guys are panicking over two much concern on these languages. I am good with any school who provides decent ventilation, good sanitary bathrooms and good play ground facilities. Anything else is extra

I can only talk about Telugu. I saw few school ads about French, Mandarin but I don't know anyone who takes these languages. Also no idea on Hindi at Grade - 5 and above. If your kid is in 5th grade, he/she might require some tutoring to keep up with the curriculum. I've seen kids catch up in 6 months to 1 year.
Govt is reducing the syllabus for Telugu so I don't think it would be a problem for the kids. The key is to get them interested in the literature.

That is too high.
It shouldn't cross 40% in my opinion.
Better to invest that extra 30% for your child.
