Many of us think of retiring to India and not working when we are still (relatively) young.
I have seen people die quickly, when there's nothing much to do

I can think of getting involved in social activities, non-profit, even small for profit functions etc., but are these things sustainable?

what would you if you had all the time in the world and next 40 years to live on a limited budget? How do you keep the motivation to keep any thing you start going for that long?

thoughts welcome!

My humble opinion.

When you're mobile, able to perform work, use your expertise, you shouldn't try to retire but reduce the workload gradually and confine when it becomes very challenging physically. While you're in your business / work, slowly increase the social activity as taking part in the local organizations.

It is very tough when you're idle, very tough to spend from savings. You could enjoy the break only in the middle of the work. Also once you're idle, you're most likely to create more expectation among your environment and turns sour.

Keep pushing as long as you could.

Our ancestors never retired unless they couldn't see, move. Why us ?

Remember - "A body in rest tends to remain in rest while a body in motion tends to remain in motion". In nutshell...keep yourself active and occupied and remember "Empty mind is a devil's workshop".

Good Luck.

"Retirement" is very relative. Most people are thinking about "financial security" for life when talking about "retirement". Otherwise "doing nothing", you will go nuts. I mean you cannot keep having fun all the time. It is just not possible. You will feel bored of that also. Some people play golf during retirement. To the outsider, it might seem as having fun. Actually it is not. Especially if you are trying to get better - it is one of the most frustrating sport also. I yearn to be financially secure, but I will never "retire". I plan to work till I die. Maybe I will take a few months off and "do something else" but never retire ( laziness or physical inability or not ambitious ).
