Would you have R2I'ed if you had a good position in the US?

I agree with roxstar. R2I decisions became easier because India is a growing economy. People who came in 70’s and 80’s also wanted to go back for emotional reasons. But most of them did not go back to India. During those times, people used to say that India is 100 years behind US. I know few people who tried multiple times to settle in India in early 90’s, but came back to US.

roxstar;249924I dont think the whole idea of being director or VP matters as much as what one's career ramp is. IF someone is staturated at the VP or director level, R2I might be a consideration. On the other hand if someone is a director and thinks he can make VP in 2 years, then that is a more compelling reason not to rock the boat and stay put in the US.

Overall I think generally people who are doing well in their careers and are rising are a LOT less likely to think about r2I unless they see a very very pressing family issues or they see a very compelling opportunity to make it very big in India. Say for instance one is a Director at a major tech company and he/she gets offered the role of a country manager of a competing tech company, that might be an offer to consider Or say the director person gets poached by some brilliant minds who are launching a very sexy venture etc or another case if the director feels that an international assignment at this time will do him/her good, then perhaps he/she will go for it.

Finally I would say one more thing and I know it is different strokes for different folks and many people want to return for 'emotional reasons', 'aging parents, 'culture' etc but if tommorow the US economy were to turn around and grow or the Indian economy were to go sour --- Remember both of them are strong possibilities --- then and good chunk of folks will put their R2I plans on hold and some will even toss them into the garbage can. I know i am being a bit too blunt by saying this but that is a reality for most if not all people.

Most people would. It depends if they are getting a promotion. Generally, if you are successful in the US, then you will most probably succeed in India as well. Most people would go for personal reasons, family issues or some other pressing issues etc. I have seen lots of IBM'ers R2I as they got good pay and better title in India.
