All,
Phew! Our container left from Atlanta with Sky2C today. We went with Sky2C because couple of our friends moved with the same company and they had positive things to say...may not be the best.
We started shopping for shippers sometime in January. We confirmed and booked Sky2C during the 1st week of Feb.
We booked a 20 feet container. Though we knew we would require little over 20 feet for the stuff we bought, we didn't want to pay couple thousand more for the spill over.
Me and my husband started shopping 6 months back. We thought, unlike lot of other people, we had plenty of time for planning and shopping. We now realize that not having enough time is better than having too much time. We spent too much time comparing prices, shopping and shopping for unnecessary stuff.
We had lots of plastic boxes (bought during Christmas sale) at home. We used them for fragile items. We did not buy a single cardboard box. We got lot of cardboard boxes from our office mail room, grocery stores and from friends. We packed 99% of the stuff ourselves. We hired a local guy (who was in the moving business for the past 15-20 years) to pack one last TV & dining table and also for loading. He turned out to be very very good. He came with couple of helpers. They quickly packed the TV and table. While they were packing, container arrived at 9:30AM. Container guy said that he will be coming between 9 and 10AM. He came exactly at 9:30. It took about 3 hours for loading. The container left exactly at 12:20PM.
I will let you know how our stuff arrived in India and the custom experiences etc once we settle down in India.
If anybody would like to know what we fit in a 20 feet container, let me know and I will post the details.
Thank you.

ramkan,

You have approx. 1300 - 1400 CFT. No way all these items will fit in a 20' container. You can either scale down by 350 CFT or go for a 40' container. A 40' HC container allows for more than twice the volume at only 40% additional cost. An option to consider.

Feel free to email us at [email protected] for a free door to door quote and a free moving and customs guide.

Our sofa and love seat were new and still in boxes. We packed all our clothes in trash bags and filled the sofa and love seat to save some space.

Thanks for sharing your inputs. Can you share where and what model of student desk and chair did u buy? Can't we custom make them in India along with the wood work that we do for interiors?
