I am beginning to think that this Thanks feature is used more as cunning than for its purpose.
A thank is a thank is a thank. How can a thanked post which a member felt useful while reading could be unthanked(thanks withdrawn) later when the one see the member is not agreeing with you on other topic?
How and how? Why relate two different topics?
Some people(may be same person) withdrawn 3 thanks from my past post(s) which is perfectly alright but I kindly ask them next time when they want to thank a post, make sure they do it with full heart and not to simply please the other person.

Its benefits far outweigh the problems.
Besides, Admins can change the settings of the thanks feature so that people may not delete their thank, once done so. I personally think its not that big/frequent of an issue.
(did you check if your post count too went down? Sometimes, some old threads gets purged, causing the post and thanks count to go down. Again admins, can change the settings such that even if a thanked post is deleted, the thanks counter remain the same.)

If it has happened between yesterday and today, it could be because of counter update progam. We ran that once in a while after removing some deleted threads/posts. I see usually reduce the number of posts and thanks.

MR,
You have Jani for company. This was one of the reasons mentioned by Jani regarding why he doesn't use the Thanks feature.

MR, I know this is not addressed to me, but I'll take a shot at it anyway. Thanks in forum are best treated on par with naturalistic observation (aka people watching). The watching and observations become more interesting and intriguing if extended to the people that don't show up.
About the removed thanks, there can actually be valid reasons for those, though an example eludes me. For my part, I very rarely remove thanks, and do so following the five second rule.

RRS has been a valuable contributor to this forum. Now, I also may not like some of her posts or some of her admin decisions. It is simply not possible to like everything about everyone all the time. But, the current situation is deplorable.
RRK, Desi and admin folks, can you use some backdoor diplomacy to request her to remain as an active contributor in this forum?
No offence, but I do not see any point in congratulating for 2000, 3000, 4000 posts. The Thanks feature is another story. How many thanks are attributed to posts in H&B threads and how many posts are being thanked just for political leanings? Are we creating too much of hierarchy and echelons here? Is it causing unhealthy environment? Previously we had this senior member, distinguished member... something like that. Then some members complained that it is causing some kind of a power structure and that was discarded. While I am not against the medals and honors, are we trying to create a hierarchy in a recreational environment? I have only the questions and not answers . Well, at the end of the day (Thanks Dhoni) we are all here for some recreation and for having some fun. My overall message here is, let us take things easy, cool down and not fight on small things.

Well said, layman. I second your thoughts.
While appreciation for reaching the milestones motivates folks to be more active in the forum, I see that it also creates unhealthy competition...

Exactly. The 'Thanks' feature/stats and people clamouring for that is just disgusting! No 2 ways to say that and moreover a gift for reaching some stat.
PS: If someone is in the running for that book/gift just let me know and I can take sometime to go and thank all of your posts.!

I disagree. Do you guys know how much effort/time it takes to reach 1000 posts let alone 2000/3000?. People get bored after a few posts but to continue posting and answering other peoples queries and providing your view points on multiple topics is not an easy thing to do. It only shows how much they like this forum and are willing to provide their time for it, which in itself is praiseworthy.
Coming to thanks, people thank a post if they enjoy the post or found something useful or agree to the view point. So whats wrong in appreciating members who have provided that. Even if people banter about thanks received, I am sure nobody is consciously trying to increase their thanks count. Those people have been here even before thanks feature. its just a way to quantify their addiction to this forum.
Take the example of inusfor40yrs(not sure if he is still around), He felt he was not appreciated/acknowledged. Thanks feature gives you an oppurtunity to retain such members and encourage them to post.
IF all the members started reading and no one posts, then there is no forum :)
