Hi Admin, nice idea of having this diary, letting people know how we start and how we end up achieving our various goals.
I am from Pondicherry and my wife from Chennai and we have three kids (14, 7 & 4), we are all french born (Pondicherry being ex French Colony).
We started buying our piece of land in Panayur three years back as a summer holidays house to start with, on completion of the house last summer we realised this was more than a summer house. The idea of R2I started at that time.
I have been working in Monaco as Auditor for an UK CA firm for the last 17 years , my children being French and studying in French was the biggest hurdle moving to India, unlike other . We had open discussion with my eldest kid (14 years) she was very excited studying in English and to be living in a big house near the beach.
The next step is I went to Chennai last October (on return from one of my trips from bangladesh) and looked for few schools and my choice went to British International School for the following reasons:
- having studied in French (even though familiar with English) my kids would not be able to cope with the indian hard core educational system, so choice of schools were very restricted for my elsdest of 14 years and even for the two boys of 7 & 4 due to language adaptation they would require an adaptation period which the traditional schools could not consider
- they follow O levels, A levels exams are taken with British Council Chennai
- friendly atmosphere (Mr Palaniappan the Principal is very kind) at school foreigners, French Dutch, NRI kids and lots of Koreans (Hyundai is not too far)
- amazing students/teacher ratio (my kids would need some time to adapt themselves to full English medium)
- close to Panayur, located at Neelangarai
The only problem is the budget, not affordable for everyone approx 1.5 lakhs for 9th grade and 60k for 2nd grade. Apart from that the school approach is exactly what I expect from an International School, they adapt to the capacity of eachj and every student and not the reverse and this has its own price unfortunately. i am thankful to God to afford ourselves this kind of services.
I am mostly working as consultant for European Union approving various grants & funds worldwide.
I came to an agreement with my employer to work 4months a year for them from Chennai with my curent benefits pro rated to 4/12 as basis and the remaining time will be all mine to look after other personal investment projects from India. Having my new house completely paid off and nothing else to pay, I believe we would require approximately 60k/ month to run the family from Chennai.
My family will move to Panyur early June 2007 and I may join them same time or a bit later depending when I can complete local assignments.
We are moving to India with an entry visa of 6 months and hoping to obtain the OCI from Chennai, good to see from this forum that a few fellows have managed to obtain the later within4 to 5 weeks after their arrival.
Today seems a nice day to start my diary as one of the transport guys came to visit us today to quote the transport charges and we are hoping to get a 20 ft container to take all the things we accumulated in our house during these long years. The usual questions are what to take/leave behind, is it better to keep it to the minimum and buy everything brand new there. It's a vast area that I'm not going to develop here, we would rather decide depending upon the charge they quote what to take or not but the minimum items would be: two LCD TV ( 1 brand new 42 ''), dish washer, cooking range, sofa set, two desktops, 1laptop, clothes, toys for the kids etc..
Keep u posted.

Panayur - congrats and keep posting. I am intrigued. I am sometimes apprehensive planning going from california to bangalore with KG going kids, which is really like moving from madras to bangalore or something in terms of how common it is. Your case is a lot more challenging. Grown up, francophone kids. Culture shock, language shock all rolled into one. I hope it is smooth and you and your family succeeds - it gives me confidence!! keep it up.
Couple of questions:
1. Where is panayur? How much is land out there right now? and would you have internet, shopping, travel connectivity etc. from there?
2. If you dont mind sharing - what was/is the motivation for what people would consider a drastic move?

MC2P,
Nice and detailed post. It sure is inspiring to those planning to R2I w/ older kids.
I too must try and see if I can get a shipping agent to visit and estimate the size of the container that I might need.
Thanks for posting -- DL

Hi Nand, thanks for getting interested in my posts, i thought may be I was putting too much of details, on second thought I believe sharing our motivations could be helpful so I will continue if you don't mind :emwink:.
Answers:
1. Panayur is on the ECR before the toll gate to Pondicherry on the beach side we bought our land. The current value of a ground is 42 lakhs (last week transaction price same street, called Sea Shore Town actually I like this name very much).
For Shopping malls you need to go to Adyar (8kms) but for day to day life everything is available at Panayur, spice shop, butcher, fish market etc. Quiet a lots of schools are around within 10kms. Internet connection is good my father in law is connected most of the day, no electricity problems so far (our house was only completed in Sep 2006).
2. The main motivation is essentially providing the double culture exposure to my kids, I had when i left to France when I was 16 years old, I wanted to give them the same opportunities. For the moment they are no different to a standard french kid, the indian side is lacking to my taste as we speak French at home no other indian community nearby.
Of course the current indian economy results do have their importance on our decision as well. I definetely believe when my little boys will turn 25 India would have better opportunities than in Europe. By that time I do not want them to be strangers in India. Anyway it's a kind of job hedging position for them, am I being too technical here? :emsmilep:.
The other reason is that we can afford a servant and a driver which I can't permit myself even with my comfortable salary.
Savings did not really come into account as I was going to be working as Senior Consultant from Chennai (maintaining a better standard of life probably) for the European Union. However selling my house in South of France would definetely privide us a financial buffer against uncertainties in life.

thanks for the detailed response - really appreciate your level of detail and it does help others in a similar situation. I see that you have planned this out pretty comprehensively. Surely job hedging and double culture exposure makes sense especially as you mentioned, the growth in the Indian economy. However, South of France is certainly like a garden of eden compared to where you are going to - I am sure you will certainly miss it the day you actually take the trip to the airport for your flight out. Nevertheless, in spite of the challenges, it will pay off in the long run as you predict. All the best and keep posting.

We finally received quote for a 20 ' container and surprise one local transport firm quotes for ? 4300 and the second one from Nice is only ? 2900. I don't have to say which one is retained.
I believe ? 2900 for a full container from south of France to Chennai is not that expensive.

Hi there,
Should I say we have been busy since I last put my article? A lots of positive things have happened too, to start workwise the work permit has been finally dispatched to the local authorities ( iam going back home for market prospection), more importantly we are signing the sale deed in 10 days time. Good that I should be making approximately 150% of the purchase price which should be useful for some business plan back home:emwink:.
Monday is the big day container people are coming, we have required they did all the work hopefully everything would go smoothly.
We have planned to go to Lourdes we have been there many times each trip is so enjoyable, we should be visiting Disneland for three days before our departure planned for June 2007.
We have bought Karcher cleaning machine, nice big umbrella to put on the terrasse of our house 3m X 4m, fishing rods, nice barbecue (could be used with a gas cylinder), aquarium with fittings.
We are thinking about buying may buy a brand new sony 40inches full hd which costs less than us$2000, I would be interested to know your opinions about the customs duty i may have to pay on the brand new considering I am bringing a two and half year old lcd tv and a 4 year old normal cathodic tv.
Anyone has returned recently to Chennai ? CAn anyome describe going through the Customs process on container arrival?
One main question I would require your advice please, as the container will be arriving probably two to three weeks after our arrival should we declare ourselves as TR at the Airport arrival ? What if we do not declare ourselves at arrival and only do on collecting the container? Please reply.

We all left Monaco on June 2nd, Nice to PAris (Air France), then Paris Doha, Doha Chennai through Qatar. Long journey, service with Qatar Airways is appalling, usual special service they provide for indian destinations. Me being a frequent traveller , I always noted same Travel companies within Europe or US Europe provide fairly good service on board, but as soon as you take it to India the quality falls to great extent, my personal opinion anyway.
Eventhough we started our flight with Air France and continued our onward journey with Qatar airways, people at Nice airport agreed to put the luggage through up to Chennai, that was a big relief as my travel agent told me that I would have to unload all the luggage and check in again with Qatar in Paris, I really thought It would be a killer, managed to escape thanks Lord.
We had 10 luggage checked in and five bags with us (normal cabin baggage size) excep^t the one carrying my suits, that alerted the Air France people who got upset saying we had too many bags with us and over sized and they urged to get rid off three luggages immediately. We were the last one's to board big panic they were interested in my samsonite baggage, we just concentrated to not to check in the bag with jewels and when i gave the three luggages to be put with luggages (rough handling) i realised i had put the brand new laptop Sony I had bought for my wife as accompanied luggage, I was sure considering airport handlings of luggages in Nice, Paris, Doha and Chennai I would collect the laptop in pieces.
Luck was with us I am typing all this from the laptop which survived all these manoeuvres, so glad It survived.
Leaving my flat in France at 3 am and arriving exactly 24 hours later with three kids in Chennai was quiet an experience on itself. The good surprise came with the Customs, even with our 4 completely full trolleys and a special eye catcher box LCD TV screen 42'' (actually i had used just the box, probably not the best idea to escape from Customs eagle eyes) which just contained kiddies's toys. The officer stopped us and asked whether any dutiable items we brought, I just told I had one 15'' lcd screen for PC inside that LG box and we carried Play Station3, he just collected the small customs declaration forms and let us go. That was refreshing believe me, after 24 hours travel, all the hassles of handing over all the client files to the colleagues, and other troubles encountered poreparing R2I, such a nice behaviour from the Customs was just jollufying for me, this is not may be the correct term anyway, amirthame.
Now it's been five days since we landed we are settled at Panayur, school for children is on July 2nd only, we went three times to the beach (just 300 meters from my cottage), we have my father in law's Maruti 800. Yes, I know it's too small for a big family, still we have to fiund a driver to carry us around as my in law is 74 and I am not feeling secured that he drives us around in the ECR. Me driving in India could not be foreseen even on my dreams, i passed my licence in France 20 years back and ever driven in India, so far.
We should be having a driver this week end and we will go around to select our family car. The potential models are: Toyota Innova, Mahindra Scorpio, Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Pajero or Ford Endeavour. My personal choice would be Ford but the consumption seems very high, might end up with Innova.
Budget is quiet flexible as I have fixed 20 lakhs max, I have been using the same Audi for the last 10 years so I decided its pay off time for me, in addition to the Rolex I bought myself before returning.
It's very hot in Chennai, enjoying very nice home cooking , biriyanis, fish fries with two servants at home. Such a relief for my poor wife who has been looking after a big fly in France.
The container is coming on the 22nd, I am sure I will have some stories to tell about in due time.
Take care all, and I wish u all a happy R2I.
Reward is all about taking risks, I believe.

Nice post and very detailed. way to go. congratulations on your R2I. I notice that you had a 20' inch container. Can you list the big items that you took on it just for us all to get an idea of how much it could take? Some of the things I noticed you mentioning are barbeque, aquarium, TV etc.
thanks
