Hi All,

I have been reading this forum for a while and thought I could share my plan.

I have been in US for almost 4 years. My wife is a home maker and have a son who just turned 3. I and my wife are from Coimbatore. From the day I came here, I was sure that I will go back. So I never bought a home and did not apply for GC.

Finally I have decided to return to Chennai. I, with couple of my friends, am going to do my own start-up and so job is not a problem.

I have a 2BHK apartment in Bangalore. I am going to keep it so that I can use the rent for partial monthly expenses. I am planing to buy an apartment in Chennai.

I am planning to sell/dispose everything here and go home with just the suitcases packed with clothes and my son's toys.

Yet to start listing items to sell. Planning to inform the office on Nov 30, give 2 weeks notice, and book the ticket on the same day. Hope I can get everything done in the next three weeks.

I will keep this thread posted on my experiences.

Completed the first step to R2I today. I sold my car.

Its a 2009 Nissan Altima with only 5300 miles. I bought it new, clean title, no accidents, except that I once replaced the trunk lid as a dent was irritating me (just scratched a curb; no other car involved). I always used the public commute and so the miles were low.

First, I generated a carfax report and noticed that the trunk lid replacement was reported as an accident.

Then, I listed it in craigslist, ebay motors (both local and auction), and auto-trader.

The KBB value was 13.8K (if condition is excellent) and edmunds was 13K. I listed it for 12.9K friday night.

Got a lot of email enquiries, mostly from craigslist. Most of the desis were vary of the carfax report mentioning an accident.

Two of them wanted to see my car, almost at the same time. One from craigslist and other from autotrader. The first person (from autotrader) who saw the car liked it and immediately paid $1K advance. He will be paying the remaining amount tomorrow and take the car. I looked him up on linkedin sand made sure he was who he claimed he was. I was happy that I am selling the car so quickly that I offered him a $200 discount though he didn't ask for it.

The second person also liked it but I told him that I already received the advance from the first guy.

So the car was sold in 1.5 days.

Next steps: Inform my manager about leaving and start selling other household stuff.

Jay,

Good luck with your plans. Care to share about your startup details? Do you have funding or you will be bootstrapping it? I'm also in Fremont, let me know if you need help with moving.

Thanks,

Jay,
I dont know how you will handle dents, scratches when you will drive your car in india, since you mentioned about how irritating it was to have a dent in your Altima :-)
I already have 4 cases of dent removal, painting done on my car which I started driving for past 5 months after my R2I

Hotzone1,

Thanks for your wishes and thanks for offering your help.

I don't have funding. I will bootstrap it and my start-up partner has also committed to invest as much as I will. Whatever I earned in US in the 4 years, I am going to buy an apartment and rest I will spend for my start-up. If it fails, I will think I never came to US ;)

Hitraj,

Very true. I am seriously thinking of buying a second hand car as I might not be able to tolerate a dent in a new car.
