Dear Forum members
I used to be active on this forum when I was in US. I just wanted to let everyone know that I have completed 11 years post R2I. I am fine and counting my blessings. Moved a few times in India due to job opportunities but no major regrets.
I went to USA in June 1997 and came back on 14th February 2006. The forum helped me to make up my mind and also gave logistics and other resources.
The India that we left in 1997 was different and now 2017 life is indeed different.
My message is that you need to follow your heart and make sure you do a sincere effort and do not try to justify your choices either for R2I or LIA.
USA and India are two very different countries and they both have some benefits which the other lacks (big time!).
My philosophy is that variety is the spice of life and I have a good fortune of being able to experience the good things and opportunities in both these countries. For most things, you have to make a choices in life and stick with it and be resilient and persistent.
I see a lot of discussion and butting of heads regarding raising kids , education systems etc. over the years and my two paisa worth of advice is that we need to focus on providing our kids with coping skills in both countries.
I have now had 15 years of association/membership in this forum and I just want the aspiring R2I members to know and be assured that yes, when we are health , qualified and determined their are opportunities in India as well.
regards
Rajahindustani

Dickeybird- My main residence is in NCR - Bahadurgarh where we built our house. I have moved out from Goa after 7 years and then went to Punjab for an AMRUT project. I will keep moving due to nature of my work and I also am the type of person who does not want to leave out opportunities.
A while ago I had read somewhere that the problem with opportunities is that they are realized ONLY after they are lost.

I am determined , not to let that apply to me. So far by God's grace I am able to recognize the opportunities. Got to go for my brisk walk. Will check back with you later.

RH,

You need to complete atleast 40 credits to be eligible for SS.

Per year, max you can accumulate is 4 credits. That means you need to work 4 more years to complete just the minimum eligibility.

But if you are a non-resident alien or even GC holder, mere elibility will not suffice. You need to live in US to collect payment. SSA allows abroad payments only for US citizens.

Even after that, payment amount is dependent on average of your highest earnings for 35 years. So if a person has worked just 10 years, rest of the 25 years is zero, the average income computed by SSA will be very less. For example, person’s average earning for 10 years was 105K/yr and for next 25 years was 0, his average for SS is computed as 30K->(105*10 + 25*0)/35. That might result in at the most $870 monthly benefits(after tax) when the person turns 67.

Not an amount that can suffice retirement needs.

I used to think so too - but apparently Indians can receive SS payments while residing in India.

Ex.: from: http://www.investmentnews.com/article/20160629/BLOG05/160629898/social-security-benefits-for-noncitizens

Citizens of India as well as many African, Asian and Middle Eastern countries, can collect Social Security benefits outside the U.S. if they have earned the minimum 40 quarters of covered earnings.
