I discovered this website not long ago and I'm glad I did it before I actually moved. Have been learning a lot and its a great help in preparing me and my family for this BIG move. Excitement and anxiety building hand in hand.
Family of 4 - R2Iing in May 2008. Hubby is getting a transfer of job. We always knew we would go back one day. Have been in the US for 8 years, kids are 6 and 3 year old. My older child is kind of not sure why we would want to go and live in India. She expresses that she's happy and contended with her school/friends here and is not keen on moving at all. I just hope they will both end up liking and enjoying it as much as we do.
Both of us have EAD's and have been working on EAD status for the past 4 years. Hubby planning a visit to India in a week to secure a rental place, scout for children's school admissions etc.. I hear we are late for the school admissions and it will be a challenge. I will look for a job once the kids and all of us are settled and feel at-home.
We rent the place here in the US, so no worries there. Intend to R2I with just the couple of suitcases - the way we came to the US.
To-do list for US are
1. Sell the cars
2. Get rid of all the furniture and household items
3. Shop for the wish-list items for India
4. Sort out the finance and tax papers.
5. Get the medical records prepared for kids, school leaving certi...etc
Please feel free to point out anything that I'd be missing.
Thanks!!

Congratulations. My r2i story is pretty much same as yours. Quick question - are you planning to keep GC process going someway, and if yes, how? Please let me know if I can discuss this with you offline. Thanks.

We discussed with the lawyer, and there are probably two scenerios.
1. Most likely we should get the GCs before we leave. In this case, me and hubby's GC will be independent of each other. Hubby will continue coming to the US every other month, and also his company will run a payrol in the US, so we feel hubby shouldn't have probs keeping his GC. As for me, i may request a 2 year leave, in which case, I do not need to visit the US, and still keep my GC. These two years will not be counted towards the 5 yr needed to naturalize.
2. If we do not recieve the GC, we can continue to renew our EADs. According to the lawyer, we should be able to keep renewing. It is however a grey area, if there will be any complications once the 485 is approved. Even in that case, probably hubby wouldn't have major issues keeping his GC.
as long as one person can keep the GC, we should be ok. we are quite optimistic about the move, and so don't worry a lot about having the GC and keep the door open to come back.

Good Luck with your R2I plans. Good to see someone moving back to Mumbai. Our R2I plans are 3-4 years away from now. And the one question I keep asking myself is whether I will ever get a chance to move back to Mumbai.....I am hoping.

Glad to see someone headed to Mumbai. We will be r2i'ing in Jan 2009. Hubby will be here for a few more months. We bought a house in Andheri which is under construction.
Where will you guys be in Mumbai and have you short listed any schools. I am pretty sure my 4 year old will be asking me the same question when its time for us to leave. He is very attached to his house ( even our old house ), his school and friends. Are you planning to shop here before your r2i as I saw you mentioned that you will only take a few suitcases back.

We are going to be around Andheri area as hubby's office is in Andheri(E). Where are you building a home in Andheri? We plan to rent right now and at the same time look for a newly constructing sites and book a flat.
Well - have been shopping but very limited. Every time I visit India, I notice pretty much everything available there. And also, hubby is going to make frequent trips to the US even after the move. So I can always shop online and have him bring stuff over. Sounds pretty convenient - but we'll see...

Hi Captainzatac
We are also r2i in May/June '08, to Mumbai - plan to live in the Mahim (W) area, so that we are close to the in-laws.
I was in Mumbai for 3 weeks in mid Jan, primarily to get the school scene sorted out for my kids - 9y and 5y. After visiting 7 different schools I was able to get admission for the kids at Podar International's IB program. The school is located in Santa Cruz. The kids had to give an online exam, and then I met the Principal for an interview. As per the admissions person, Ms Gladys, the school gives preference to NRI's. You may want to check it out.
We have a lot of work to do here in terms of selling our house in Edison, NJ and furniture, cars etc. , before we move. Since the school starts in mid June, the wife and kids will move by end May and I will follow later.
Then of course we have to find a rental place in Mumbai .... the r2i is looking a lot harder than it looked about 5 months back when we made the decision :emdgust:.
