There was one guy here that imported a container load of almonds from USA to India (I think from California to Hyd).
I can't remember his name but you can try and search on 'almonds'. I remember he said due to an agent's negligence he broke even or lost money on the deal. I have researched this area in the past (not almonds but other commodities such as palm oil), and it seems like a tough thing to break into - a very opaque industry where connections/rapport is required. You'd be better off going to work for a physical commodity trading firm and learning the ropes.

I tried mango import to US. But eventually costs of importing mangoes from India is busted the idea. People here prefer mangoes from Mexico, which are lot cheaper than imported from India. I tried selling imported paintings from India but lost money on it. I guess my lack of marketing and location of stay had more to do with it. I have seen that people here are not ready to pay big bucks for things from India/Asia. Most Asian/Indian craft was successful in flyer market rather than auction houses/antique stores etc. I also looked into importing green products (like green paper, lantern, paper based products etc). But this was before economy went bust. Green products from India were proving to be too expensive.

I am looking into selling scrap metal to India from US. Don't have a clue on where to start or gain knowledge about buyers in India or sellers in US. I also want to look into selling trees to India. Due to recession rates of trees have fallen quite a bit. Info about buyers in India is difficult to find online. Most work in India is done with word of mouth.

I have seen quite a few sellers in India, selling stuff online. Most of it is NRI oriented material and there is huge competition. I think makeup products will sell very well.

Good thread. Thanks. I am R2Iing soon and would be interested in checking out if something can be imported into India from the US/Canada.

rmandy, Are almonds cheaper in the US? Where does US gets its almonds from? WOuldn't it make sense to ship it from the place where they produce it? Tell us more about your experience.
Thanks.

Thanks, I was about to say the same.

mn_op, if you are serious, there was a post or a thread about almonds. If I remember right, the guy was saying that there is a huge demand for good quality dry fruits from people who own bakery, sweet stalls. He mentioned in his post that the almond stock used to get over within few hours.

Yes, there is a huge demand for almond imports into India from the USA. We have good relationships with wholesale Almond suppliers and also have direct high volume contracts with steamship lines. If you have a buyer in India, we can work out supply and transportation for you. It must be in wholesale quantities though (1 container minimum).

I'm happy to help if you need assistance and are seriously looking to venture into Imports/Exports between USA and India.

Best Regards,

What is the approximate cost of the logistics? - pick--up, load into container, shipment charges, unload, ? Do you have an idea of import duty charges?

Transportation charges depend on a host of variables including origin, destination, weight, etc. We are happy to work out a quote if you want to contact us with specific requirements.

As for customs duty, you can click here to get an idea.

Hope this helps.

For almonds it is Shelled: Rs 100/95 and for unshelled: 35/30. Why two rates in each category?
