I am planning to get my passport renewed at the Consulate at NYC. I am wondering if I should drive from Boston to NY and apply in person or by mail.
It makes sense to apply in person only if I get the new passport the same day. Has anyone done this recently? I saw a few threads around this topic, but those were a few years back. Any recent experience will be helpful.

Is your current passport from India? If so, it will take atleast 1-2 months to renew it. They have to get clearance from India before issuing a new passport.
If it was already renewed here, it might take 3-4 days. One of my friend had a passport extn from here and it took him 1 week for the second renewal.
I haven't heard anyone who got it on the same day recently.

I would suggest that you apply in person and request it back by mail. If you are missing any documentation then it would easier to arrange it there itself(come with full set of documents as you would go for a US visa interview). AFAIK, they don't do the same day passport anymore
For experiences with NY Consulate, enjoy reading this thread :)

Thanks for the responses. My current passport was issued in India and I think I will apply in person and request for the new one by mail.

I applied last year through mail and it took just 2 weeks.
On an earlier occasion, I had to notarize a form at Indian consulate, NY and it took them all day
It's messy, crowded and unorganized in there. I would avoid going unless I live in NY.
Make sure you have your application, supporting docs and money order for right amount and mailing worked for me

For me , I applied in Dec'2009 and I got the passport renewed within 2 weeks. I have sent the docs by mail. If you call the NYC indian consulate between 2 to 3 PM they will answer ur phone call and they can give the tracking # once they post it to u. I don't see any difference between applying in person and sending by mail.

I need to renew my already expired Indian Passport. I went online to look for the nearest consulate, and its San Francisco which is a cool 10-12 hours drive from where we live. So I decided to apply online. The instructions on the website asked to fill in the online form, attach two pp photos, old passport along with cashiers check of $40 (for 10 years) and mail it to the consulate and expect the renewed passport in two weeks. Sounds simple enough. Well, how wrong was I, the instructions say fill in the form which is four pages but when I click on the online application it just has one page. I for some reason cannot find the rest of three pages. Can someone please guide me to the correct website/link that has all the four pages!! I might need to travel to India next month!!
