We just had a baby and planning to get a passport for her. We plan to return to India by end of this year for good.
1. we cannot pay NRI fees
2. we might get an assignment in US after 2 years

Which passport - US/Indian should we get?
Can I get a US passport and get citizenship in India to avoid NRI fee?
Please suggest the best way to go about this to avoid NRI fee.

Just had a baby --> Baby goes to school in 2012. If you are in India, NRI fees doesn't really hit you until the kid is beyond class X. (unless you want those exclusive IB program schools). So, that means, you want to deny that human the previlige of owning the citizenship of the planet's most advanced (and most coveted) citizenship because you can somehow tell today with certainity that in the year 2026 (when your kid hits college) you cannot afford NRI fees.

Well, because you had the tenacity to think and even ask this question in such a public forum you deserve to get all the flame that you will attract.

If you cannot afford NRI fees in India, rest assured that you cannot afford fee for any half-decent college in US.

BTW, this is my angriest post in a public forum in a long long time.

Indian schools dont seem to charge extra fees if your kid is a US citizen. As #2 wrote, NRI quota seats kick in at the Engineering/Medical seat level.

Armchair analysys suggests most R2I folks prefer a US passport for their children.

Why do you have to worry about NRI fee right now?

If it comes to that point in life where you cannot pay the NRI fee, and getting into Indian colleges seems more promising, can't you have your kid revoke the US citizenship and take up Indian citizenship?

Who knows what the world will be like 20 years from now? Maybe the world will be oil depleted by then and Alternative Energy might be the most lucrative industry and the UAE having been paid in gold for oil would have the worlds best universities.

if you are planning to come back to US with the baby you have no option but to get the US passport, as US will NOT issue visa to a child who is a natural born citizen.

First of all congrats.

I agree with vizagdesi's sentiments. If you can not afford nri fees or not sure if you might get an assignment, it would have been better baby born in India. I know couple of my friends who deliver their babies in US when wife was 7-8 pregnant in India. They get assignments in US for couple of months (L1/H1) and after delivery go back to India.

Most of the people does not know advantages/implications of USC. Its like if your friend is having US born baby, for me too !

Very early to worry about NRI fees in colleges. Get US passport, the child has been born in USA and is US citizen. After 18, let child and parents together decide to get Indian citizenship.

Will need US passport to bring child back to USA who is US born.

Yes Waly... I understand. I heard from someone that the NRi fee at school itself is very high and not affordable which made me raise this concern.
If that is not true....

Renu, you have some schools in mind. Check their website for fees for Nris.
