Re. Indian passport for US born children

Our daughter is born here in the US and we have not applied for her passport yet. We will be R2I by end of this year and do not plan to come back to USA in the near future. Both I and my wife are Indian citizens.
I know for sure from Indian consulate here that we can apply for Indian passport for the kid. I am sure there are lot of parents with children born in US on this forum. Has anyone got Indian passport for their children born in US? Do you think it is a good option? We are thinking of applying for Indian passport since we are not going to live here. Do you know if there are any issues with this? It will be good to hear from people who have already R2I. Your opinion/comments on this will be helpful.

If I remember correctly Samurai (msn-id Desi_Samurai) or another had done something similar. You may want to look in the google backups of the MSN forum.
US born kids of foreign parents may have an option to make a choice (to retain USC or not) when they are 18., as well.

Only issue is if your child ever intends to come to the US, the consulate will insist that your kid take USC. But if you are certain you guys won't come to the US till the kid is 18, you can choose Indian citizenship. Then when the kid is 18, he/she can decide what citizenship they want.

Why do you want to have Indian passport in first place. You can get US passport and PIO card at Indian Consulate. PIO card benefits are similar to an Indian Citizen. You can even own a property on this card.
PIO card is substitute for DUAL Citizenship until India starts issueing DUAL citizenship.

The main reason is that we are not going to live here and do not plan to come back in the near future (not for work on long term). PIO card benefits are not same as citizen...they are same as (Parity with) NRI and not citizens. Even OCI is parity with NRI and not citizens.
But, if they force you to get US Passport even for a visit (like Mel mentioned), then it may not be a good idea.

You could apply for a IN PP now.
US DOS will not issue a visa for USCs (and your kid is a USC by virtue of being born in the US for non-diplomat parents). So, if and when the kid comes to the US before reaching 18 years of age, apply for a US PP (and give up the IN PP).
