Advise Needed: Should I apply for Exit Visa or OCI for my Son born in India?

folks, I am traveling back to US and planning to take my family as well with me...
My son was born in Nov 2014 and I applied for his US Passport, SSN and CBRA (certificate of birth record abroad) from Chennai consulate around July 2015...
Got very busy due to work and other personal stuffs was not able to apply for OCI or visa.
Now I am planning to travel back to US along with my family in 1 to 3 months timeframe (family will join after school holidays to sync up with school there).
Can I take Exit visa for my son instead of OCI? or is Exit visa mandatory to exit India for him?
Or is it better I apply OCI (as I have another 2 to 3 months of timeframe for my family to travel).
Plus I am also worried a bit that I have not applied for his visa or other things for this long... Hope there won't be an issue...
Need your advise...
Thanks a lot.

Did your son enter India without a visa ? Or... was he made in India ?
Congratulations !!
An exit visa is mandatory for your child. The website of Our embassy in New Delhi says so. They may have told you the same when you got that CBRA, and then the passport. If you are in the habit of believing time-frames for getting the job done in India, go right ahead with the OCI visa; if not, get an exit visa for the child, and do the OCI at your leisure. You will need several months to get the thing when you are dealing with the visa outsource company in the USA.
No the delay wont be an issue; but the child cannot depart without some sort of a visa.

Hi Okonomi,
Thanks... He was born here so he entered in a way without Visa ..
So, let me choose the Exit Visa for my Son.
BTW, Can I get this done in Chennai (my home base) or do you know what is the procedure for this?
Thanks a lot for your reply.

@farfromhome,
Thanks for the info... Really, I would like to apply OCI from US instead of here, if I can exit from here to US without it.
So, can I get Exit Visa instead? I need to exit India with my Son towards end of May 2016... Myself, my wife and my other kids have OCI applied from US.
Is the procedure for Exit Visa smooth?
Please let me know.
Thanks a lot.

Smooth ? :)

Do in Madras, as the madrasis do.
Have plenty of time to spare, and if you end up with time to spare, celebrate the whatever that you got done.

Not aware of the exit visa procedures. Check with FRRO Chennai.

Sure.. Thanks...
Is Exit visa required before OCI (since he did not enter with a visa as he was born here?).
Can I apply for OCI and exit the country (of course after OCI is received?).
Thanks a lot.

There are two things.... visa and permit. An exit visa is different from an exit permit. Or so "they" say.
And besides, did anyone ever tell you not to believe anything you read on the internet ?
Chennai FRRO is a friendly place.
Those horses there who can give you better tips.
About whether to apply for OCI, exit permit or visa depending on your child's departure time frame.
Like I said, you ought to get with it, and apply for something right away.... especially if you want your child to get out of there and be in America to attend preschool in time.
