We have been thinking to R2I next year during March- May 2011 time frame. I was wondering what is the total cost of relocation for a family of 3 (hv 1 kid). Tried searching in this forums but didnt get very relevant posts.

Here are my estimates -

1) Airfare = $2,800 (one way, since my son is 3 yr old, will need a ticket).
2) Movers = $6,000 ( we are in 3 bedroom apartment, but plan to sell most of the items like TV, sofa etc, and take only books, clothes, few toys etc.)
3) Misc = $1,200 (car rental for last few days, hotel in a city in india etc.)

So overall around $10k or so.

Can any one else validate these.

Wont you need to include initial setup cost in India, since you would be selling almost everything here?
And I think, usually you would take few extra suitcases with you while returning - that itself would be around $1000/- (Is this included in the Movers category?) . I would expect Misc exp to be more than just 1K+. (Pundits, please correct me here - am just repeating what I have heard. The R2Iers can give you a better picture).

Here is the breakdown of what it cost us (moved 9 months ago)
* Airfare for family of 4 - 2600$ - $650 for one way ticket on lufthansa. No extra bags.
* shipping: $1000 for about 50 Cu Ft (9 boxes of 4.5 cu ft). We did the packing ourselves and it was shipped door to door. We had mostly books, kitchen stuff, toys and clothes
* apt lease early termination - 1 months rent.

No set-up costs in India since we already had a place to live here.

Airfare
Moving - Movers / extra luggage in flight
Lease breakage
last few days Hotel / misc exp
Initial setup in india

Hi mkngtrbl,

Since you flew Lufthansa I just wanted to get a small clarification from you. We are a family of 4 and wondering if we should buy addl. 26-30" luggage to check it in or Ship 2-4 boxes similar to the ones we use for Containers.

We might also end up using the same Airline so could you share your experience with regards to airline shipping :

1. How many bags did you end up checking in and did you pay for any extra bags? If so, was it substantial ?

2. Did you ship any container type boxes and are airlines ok with it as long as total dimensions are withing their prescribed limits or do they ask you to pay more?

Any other advice you might have is also most welcome.

Thanks

I had gathered so many suitcases in india did not want to buy more. Many were good just that few lost handle or broken wheels.

Last year duringmy visit I just used a double walled box to pack my personal stuff and took as checkin baggage. It had only personal items so no issues.
1) One thing to note have a closth or plastic inside the box as a inner lining just in case box breaks.
2) tape the box in very well specially the edges they get easily torn being put on conveyor belts.

I plan to R2I in next 6-18 months and plan take stuff in boxes only. These were double walled baxes used by movers in US. Pretty strong.

If you are buying tickets recently at Lufthansa, the economy class passenger is allowed to check-in only one baggage weighing 50lbs. I do not know what's the cutoff date for this new regulation (of 1 baggage). So check your baggage restrictions by calling them.

Lufthansa charges $250 for an additional piece weighing up to 50lbs.

Yes news limit of one checkin baggage.

Luthansa and JET airways effective now. British and allows two , its just matter of time when all airlines will come with one baggage limit and then none.

Right now second baggage is charrged $50 only, third one will be $250 as it used to be.

The option of shipping boxes by Universal will be the best option in next few months.

We did not check in any extra bags. At the time, it was 2 bags per person and we checked in a total of 8.
