We have plans to R2I to Chennai in few months, so we shipped our household items now itself without realizing / knowing that we have to be in Chennai for customs clearance. Now, since we are not there in Chennai, I heard that the customs duty will be very very high if someone (my relative/friends) clears our goods from customs. Did anybody experience this kind of issue or is there any thread related to this? please advise. I greatly appreciate your response / suggestions.

it may be almost impossible to get this cleared in chennai. however there may be a possibility to clear it by amending the name on the shipping documents to some of your friend or relative who has recently r2i and is available in chennai for the clearance.

i am also surprised that the shipper / forwarder you used did not give you this information that you would need to be in India personally to clear the goods

Amending name is next to impossible. Also TR facility goes by name on Bill of lading.
I was also in Bangalore while my goods came to Kolkata port. I had to fly back and spent
7 days to get it cleared.

Thank you very much 21stCenturyRelo for your timely response. Yes, we tried to use any friends who came there recently, but it seems their passport will be endorsed with this shipping info. We are trying other alternatives. I'll keep posted on how it goes....

if your friends, do not want to get their passports endorsed, then you can also clear the shipment on their name on payment of duty (without applying for TR).

amending the bl name is not as difficult and is fairly simple and done very often.
