For FCL shipment, I am aware that the consignee can be present in person near the container when it is opened in port fos customs. My question is , can a consignee who put LCL shipment be present in person at the time of opening the container for customs or the India port rules differ in this?

Thank you for your replies

Hi usareturn,

In most ports in India, fcl containers are opened only when the consignee or his agent is available. In case of lcl, the port does not wait for any consignee but opens (what is called de-stuffs) the container and deposits all the shipments in that container with the CFS / warehouse in Customs. Then each consignee can go clear his shipment at will and when it is convenient to him. Your own shipment will not be opened unless you or your agent approaches customs, however it will be removed from the container and deposited inside a warehouse in the port.

Trust this helps

Thanks 21centuryrelo for your reply!!

Can a LCL consignee request to be present at the time of destuffing from the container and if so, can the port deny my request?

hi usareturn,

you can certainly request to remain present at the time of destuffing, however the port may not be able to give you an exact date / time when the lcl container will be destuffed so being present at tall times may be difficult. However if you are able to reach the port at short notice, you agent may be able to work things out so that you can be present when they start the destuffing.
