We are considering Gurgaon as one of the potential cities for R2I from Detroit, MI. I have never visited the city personally but heard and read a lot about it. I wanted to know your opinion about the city. I do speak Hindi quite well so language transition would be quite easy for me. Some of my questions are listed below; I would really appreciate if you could answer some.

1> How are schools out there? I was looking at Ryan International(Gurgaon) in particular, anyone has any opinions about that school? Also is it easy to get admission in there?

2> How is the city in general, How is the traffic in the city? Do the grocery stores cater to western grocery items? Are there parks, library and other kid's kind of places around?

3> Is the weather too unbearable in Summer?

4> Are the real estate rates too high to afford to buy an apartment for 50 lakhs(3-4 bedroom) or so?

The city looks very promising on the internet, but it is always good to hear from a person who is experiencing it.

Thanks and I really appreciate you taking time to answer my questions.

Regards,
Priti

I am originally from Delhi and visit Delhi/Gurgaon once a year so perhaps I can answer a few questions. I don't know about schools - someone who has R2Ied may be able to answer better.

Being in the interiors, summers get really hot - but fortunately not as humid as Mumbai or other places. Electricity problem is not as bad as other places in India and in the last few years it has improved significantly.

real estate is expensive - mostly because of the speculation going on the last few years. Between 2002 and 2006 property prices skyrocketed. Some even appreciated by 100% per year. Fortunately this trend has started slowing down recently. I find it unlikely that prices will fall drastically - maybe they will stablize eventually.

I've seen pictures on the internet too but it's not excatly like that in reality. In reality it is still very much an Indian city with all the usual problems like cleanliness, illegal dumping, traffic, pollution, parking etc. Yeah there are some beautiful corporate buildings out there, which is what the pictures on the internet focus on. There is also a lot of construction going on in Gurgaon which is an inconvenience for now, but good for the future. The NH-8 that connects Delhi and Gurgaon is being converted into a 4 lane expressway and that project is well underway. A part of it is already open and it is really very cool. Hopefully when that is completed, the NH8 will become the lifeline of Gurgaon and actually open up more opportunities for residential contruction further away. The Delhi metro will eventually get to Gurgaon too someday.

pritiarwade,

I have seen this question being discussed on www.gurgaonscoop.com few times. You can post it (other questions) there as well. I see many responses from the residents on this site.

Some relevant threads from earlier website (last one seems to be a good one):

I suggest that you search by school (key in DPS, Ryan etc) on this site to get better results.
