Wanted to post what I heard from my sister who stays around NIBM road.
The police are going to each society issuing warning that there are tonnes of illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh living around this area.
The police are warning residents of a security issue. They pretty much said there can be terrorists hiding in this area.
There is no political will to do anything so the onus is on common man to look after security as much as possible.

We just R2I-ed to the NIBM Road area last week, and things dont seem out of the ordinary so far. Sometimes these rumors are just that - but its always better to be safe than sorry !
OP - are you living in this area ? If so, we should try to hook up.
The NIBM Road area is really nice - lots of open spaces and green hills, and the traffic and pollution isnt too bad. There is a lot of wind and good light - in fact, we've spent almost the entire week without even turning on the fan in the evenings .. and at night, it borders on being a little chilly !
From a location perspective, its about a 10-15 minute drive to Camp, and about 20-25 mins to Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar, where the best food and theatres are. Of course, if you work in the Hinjewadi area, then its quite a drive .. but this is close to Magarpatta, which also seems to be an up and coming area.
From a school perspective, there are quite a few good ones on this side of town - DPS and Vibgyor are only a 5 minutes away, and there are a lot of others close around.
Corinthian Club - one of the most popular clubs in Pune is again, a 5 minute ride, and costs around Rs3lacs or so for a life membership.
The biggest surprise for us so far has been the condition of the roads - they are great ! There are potholes and ditches, of course .. but no where near what I had feared .. and I dont know if its the suspensions or the roads, but the rides so far have hardly been bumpy - is a very very nice surprise.
All in all, our first week here has been very nice .. once we settle down a little more, I'll start a diary of our move .. in the meanwhile, if anyone has any questions, drop me a line.

hey! so glad to know your move is going smoothly. experiences such as yours are very encouraging.
do you know when does admission begin on vibgyor/dps etc? and does one have to be present personally for it? my plan is that the next time we fly, it will be because we will be moving and not scouting out schools and apartments!

I am not sure about when the school year starts - but DPS is a little different from what I've heard. It starts around April, they go for a month and then they have the summer break.
As to having to be present, I think you would have to. A lot of these schools treat "NRIs" differently and have a special category for such - which is just another way of charging more money.
When are you planning on moving ? What I would recommend is - do your research and shortlist a few schools, and then move about a month before the school year starts. I'm finding that things have become so much more streamlined here - in about 1.5 weeks, we're almost fully settled (have booked a car, have domestic help, got tv, cable, internet, etc).
The very first question is - have you decided what area to live in ? I thing everything else will follow naturally.

Hi There,
I read your post and was really interested. We are planning to R2I May 2008 and I'm visiting Pune in a couple of weeks to learn about the area. We have narrowed down to either Bishops or Vibgyor for school and most likely Nyati to live in. Clover seemed nice on paper, but seems too expensive.
The concern I do have is some of the comments on the site about # of kids staying here. Any thoughts / comments ?
