Hello folks...looking for the experts to advise on real (not mdf, plywood or artificial wood) furniture in BLR. We will be in whitefield, but will travel to the right store to find something decent.
Recently was quoted 87,000 rs for the following bedroom sets:
http://www.kidskouch.com/products.html Sorry, but
2000 us dollars for artificial wood isnt going to work. At best when I inquired they said it was like IKEA (MDF wood)...thing is IKEA is a fraction of the cost as is walmart and target.
For that kind of money I would expect pure oak, maple or quality like thomasville furniture.
Is MDF what is used in india? If that is the case, I will head to IKEA and purchase and ship the boxes and have someone put them together in india.
I am looking for complete furnishings..livingroom, dining, master bedroom and kids bedroom. I think the place was a rip off.

Just finished moving to Bengaluru and did a lot of shopping for furniture. We found good solid wood furniture of contemporary design at Home Stop (near MG road opposite Garuda mall). The prices are reasonable and home delivery was prompt. We bought a queen size bed (cot) for the guest room, a TV stand and a shoe rack all together costing close to 70 k. We bought the kids' beds from @Home on outer ring road close to Old Airport Road- Varthur road-ORR junction. They have quite a good selection of solid wood furniture too. What I noticed was you cannot get solid wood beds for kids. Looked everywhere and had to settle for compressed board for the children's furniture. We did not shop for dining table and master BR furniture as we shipped them from US.

One suggestion is to hold off buying from one store till you survey a bit. Attend one of the furniture / lifestyle exhibitions that happens in Kanteerava stadium regularly (monthly I think). There are lots of dealers, selling all kinds of real wood furniture - antique styling, modern, exotic (driftwood etc), ornate, contemporary - name it and they have it. You will get a flavor of which stores you will like and can visit those at leisure.
We have seen Malaysian wood furniture on ebay india - Some of the same pieces we have from the US, but different company name. The price was similar or even cheaper in one case - The US set cost was about USD 1200, but in India it was about INR 50000. But not sure how reliable these ebay sellers are.

If you go to Infantry road there are lots of furniture shops most of them sell laminate stuff, but I'd seen one shop selling high end furniture in teak wood. Don't remember the name of the shop, but it was at an intersection and next to the Matrix furniture shop. Had checked there and they had said if you give them a design they can get it custom made, they have a factory at Sarjapur road or somewhere.
The only problem with factory made teak wood furniture that I have seen is, they try to utilise all the wood and sometimes wood thats not fully matured can also be used, which will not last long. Engineered wood will not have that problem.
mom2gurls, I'd sent you a PM, please check.

95% of furniture in India is either Plywood/MDF type wood or Rubber wood. Rosewood is the next option. Real Quality wood like Teak is expensive in India. So if you are expecting Thomasville quality at U.S prices, then you need to ship it. The other option is cheap imports from China/Malaysia. You can also get them custom made. But you are looking at 2 months.
The other option is get it done in Rajasthan and get it shipped. Check out

http://myworld.ebay.in/sunrise_in/ Yes, it's not easy as walking into a store and buying stuff. And expect to pay exorbitantly ! Particularly if they get to know that you are an Expat.. :)
