What US could not do, India has done.
Free E file for every one. There are 3 software options.
1) pdf file that is editable
2) EXE software
3) Excel based software

Each of this software supposed to generate "xml" file and upload to the site.
A person can sign digitally or print out the return and file.

It is all free.

More information here:
http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/index.jsp

I just downloaded the software, trying to figure out which is best.
Has any one used any of these and have any recommendation ?

RRK,

Please also let us know which software is the easiest to use. For example, Turbotax in the US is fairly easy..in my experience.

thanks.

I'm not planning on using the software for this year. Anyway I plan to check all these three out to see how they work.

If any of you have tried to use it, give your feedback please..

I have filed my UK company's IRS and VAT returns on line for a couple of years as well as the Comapnies House Statements over the net, including paying the fees.

The IRS cut a deal with tax preparation companies some time
ago waiving its right to offer free filing on its web site to taxpayers.
I always wonder if they will ever cut a deal with the rest of us waiving the
right to collect taxes :emwink:

I am glad the lobbyists in India don't determine public policy,
at least in broad daylight.

This year the new forms introduced by GoI needs no annexures.

No supplemental document to be included.
Good news ?

I still dont think the forms are user friendlier and take into consideration tax payers across countries.

Yes, you have time till July-31 to file. If you dont have any other income than the interest, you can use form-1, very simple. You can download, fill it in and send the return.

Dear Murari,
I am happy that contents of my mails are found useful. Now having noted the contents , I may state :
1. RRK has correctly replied.
2. As your TDS is deducted , it is presumed that you have availed PAN or otherwise avail the same.
3. Submit the original TDS certificate with the tax return.
4. As a matter of fact , if an individual has income above the exempt limit [ presently INR 110,000 ] one is obliged/required to file tax return.

Best wishes.
