A very close relative of mine who lives in India. A bright lad who was/is above average in learning. Was a top rank holder and now works as chartered accountant. His mother is no more and his father never really cared for his son. I am one of the two relatives who keeps a regular touch with him. I can sense his above average intelligence while discussing various topics, but I cannot make a dent in his belief in dark magic. He is convinced that an elderly relative common to both our families tried to harm him through slow poison.

He cannot digest lot of food. He has got it checked but doctors cannot find remedy. I feel he is suffering from IBS and Indian doctors are not good in treating IBS. But he is convinced that this indigestion is due to slow poison. I want to suggest a chelation therapy to get rid of toxics when I go to India in December just for him to get out of this loop. I want this for placebo effect than actual chelation. What is the right way to get this done? It saddens me that even in this age and time, even highly intelligent people still believe in such irrational things.

Believing in black magic is one thing but then believing that people are out to get him, trying to poison him, may be the beginnings of paranoid delusions. Try to understand if he has some other weird beliefs about other people out to get him. Try to also understand if hears any voices or sees some things some times. Perhaps this has nothing to do with paranoid delusions but it is always to catch such things early and treat early.

I do not know what is the right way to get chelation done and whether there is any harm through that.

If beliefs of black magic, "voodism", "nazar" is paranoid delusion, then probably more than 90% of people in India suffer from it!

A false belief that someone is out to get you is a paranoid delusion. See quotes below. (Black magic is just the methodology for many Indian believers)

RRS;658632He is convinced that an elderly relative common to both our families tried to harm him through slow poison.

A paranoid delusion is the fixed, false belief that one is being harmed or persecuted by a particular person or group of people. Paranoid delusions are known technically as a “persecutory delusion.”
It involves the person’s belief that he or she is being conspired against, cheated, spied on, followed, poisoned or drugged, maliciously maligned, harassed, or obstructed in the pursuit of long-term goals.

I can vouch for this, two people related to me had schizophrenia and they used to feel that someone is trying to harm them using black magic.

Maybe when we start to lose our mind, our sense of security becomes confused and it manifests in these delusional behaviors.

Schizophrenia can be accompanies by paranoid delusions. Modern research has been able to come up with some drugs that work well for Schizoid disorders - one of them is Paliperidone Palmitate (Invega Sustena), provided once only monthly via injection. Don't know if such is available in India. Problem is that most people with such disorders refuse to take medications.

I would be afraid to take any kind of drugs for the brain as well. Few years ago, I was prescribed an anti -depressant called Prozac. I believe it is a SSRI. I also believe I was also prescribed for no reason, I was sick and was feeling down on my mood and the doctor was like you look very sad - here swallow this pill.

I took it for a few months and it has caused some mild cognitive decline, that means I can't remember things immediately. I don't live in US right now, I would probably be suing them both if I were living there.

If we dont think our mood is because of chemical imbalance why should we take medication?

Oh well. I didn't know, I thought doctor is prescribing that means I need it. It didn't occur to me that he is playing salesman of big pharma. for those, considering taking any of those anti-depressants make sure you do your research on the pills you are taking. They come with a ton of side effects, I know one person who claim to be seeing people (Hallucination) that don't exist caused by those meds, I think he was on Paxil. He used to not have such episodes before Paxil.

Big pharma need to release more clinical data before doctors start prescribing them left and right. Right now there is a pill for everything, they don't look at your diet, or underlying psychological condition.
