Hi,
After R2I in April from US after 5 years, I am exploring work opportunities in Singapore.
Would love to know more about living in Singapore and people's experiences living there. There are a few threads on the forum but most of them are old.
Please suggest housing, social life, things to do, weather, working conditions and everything else worth knowing.
FYI, I am a single 27 yr old male.

I heard Singapore is restricting foreign workers to max 40% of workforce. At present, it has 60% foreign workers. This may impact your employability in Singapore at present or in future.
Please verify this news if possible. I heard it in my inter-company meetings. I do not have any newspaper/Internet citation.

Is Singapore a police state? I am bothered about how much the government interferes in day to day lives. I have heard some draconian stories.

The law is followed to the T. That is not to say its a police state. Its a beautiful, well run country for those who are willing to work hard and follow the law.

Can you throw more light on what laws are followed to the T ? I really dont mind the laws and I am sure most of them make total sense but Singapore has the uncanny ability to enforce some really stupid ones too.

I dont know what you mean here. They follow the rules whats wrong with that. Cab drivers dont rip you off. If a store has a "closing down sale" and doesnt close down they get asked "why". So tell me what stupid laws they have and we can debate if its needed. Bottomline, I have lived there I loved it. The only reason to move was the pay was higher in US.

Can you mention a few things that struck out to you in Singapore as extremely favorable for living there?

In other
thread, you were planning to R2A, now to Singapore ?
Keep applying for job in Singapore,if you get a good one, go for it.
Don't worry about Singapore rules and regulation too much.
You are going for a job don't get involved in other stuff like rape, murder, drug etc. then you should be fine :wink
There was an incident when I was there, two Desi guys were sharing a flat ,had a fight over a kitchen, one guy stabbed the other one with kitchen knife, the guy died and other guy got death penalty. Mercy plea from the Indian govt did not work.
They hanged and jailed citizen of mighty countries like USA, Australia also. Their govt could not save them.

1. honesty in public life. prolly one of the most honest countries in ublic life.
2. Fabulous shopping a little expensive but still great.
3. great food of all kinds, I prefer thai and malay food and its great.
4. 3-4 temples that I know of for the religious minded.
5. great public transport.
6. one of worlds best airports to fly anywhere for a holiday.
7. Brilliant weather, can manage with shorts and t shirts all year( too humid for some).
Personally it being a state where law is strictly enforced is not a problem for me.
