demat account question

Greetings folks,
I am a U.S. citizen, holding OCI card, and have very recently relocated back to India (yay! still in honeymoon phase). I tried to open a demat account with HSBC as well as SBI, but as soon as I say that I am US citizen, they just say they can't open demat account.
Various web forums etc. suggest that it should be possible to open demat acct. So, my question is - how? Is "NRE demat" account my only option? Can I get online trading option with that? Can I open regular demat account because I hold the OCI card? The bank representatives seem to be totally dumb!!
Thanks a lot in advance. Hopefully, I'll upload my "R2I diary" very soon :).
