Your profile interests me (especially your committment to give 50% of your income to charity). There are quite a few AAP experts in this forum and so, please take my suggestion as a starting point and others can weigh in. I would first start with your goals and then we can develop your AAP to meet these goals. Please confirm if these goals are accurate.

SHORT TERM (<1 year) - $50K

  • I see that you are estimating Rs. 20 lacs ($50K) for settling expenses. You should consider this short-term (not medium) since are R2Iing this year. Of this, Rs. 5 lacs is available in cash in India, so from US assets, you need $38K approx.
  • In the $50K total above, I did not include your air tickets and shipping costs because presumably you have household assets/used vehicles you may be selling here that offset these one-time costs. Otherwise, plan to add about $10K to the total ($6K for 4 tickets + $4K shipping).
  • These assets should be all in liquid savings or Money market funds. Since you have $130K in cash now, this is not an issue.
MEDIUM TERM (2-5 years) - Rs. 50k/month

  • From your post, I could not see any medium term capital expenses. You expect only a monthly income (inflation-adjusted Rs. 50K/month at 2008 currency value).
LONGER TERM (>5 years)

  • Continue to need Rs. 50k/month @ today's value
  • Need $300K in 2018 for your children's eduation - is this at today's cost or your estimated future cost of college for your children?
  • Need Rs. 20 lacs ($50K) for your children's marriage - is this at today's cost or your estimated future cost?
CURRENT ASSETS:

Taxable/after-tax: $265K
Tax-deferred: $30K
India Cash: Rs. 5 lacs (presumed available for settling expenses)
India Real Estate (presumed available for sale if needed): Rs. 15 lacs ($38K). Home is not included as you plan to live in the flat that you own.
